It's Sunday morning, I woke up, it was neither too hot nor too cold, heaven after living in Florida for two years, where at a 3 am I wake up to go to the bathroom and I need to turn the air conditioner on to get back to sleep, 96 with a 87% humidity factor, can’t get a deep breath, and now, I need a blanket, warm, comfortable in my bed, look out the window and see fruit trees and sky, here in the middle of the city, but looking out the window in the dawns dim light, you couldn’t prove that I was not in the Midwest on a farm or ranch. I turn onto my back, more conscious than I was a few seconds ago, not quite awake, not quite asleep, do I want to get up and make coffee, or go back to sleep? I get up, go outside to smoke a cigarette and wow, it’s the first rain of the year. The first rainfall of the year is a very special time, it only comes once a year like Christmas and new years, I listen to the rain falling, drops hitting the cement at my feet, a soft song, quiet yet pleasurably noticeable, like a jazz band at a breakfast club, fine woman across the table, fine food on it, fine music across the room, sounds sights and smells, I Inhale my first drag on my first of ten ciggs I limit myself to per day and take it all in, dim light of an awakening day, soft rainfall with its gentle tapping of drops on the ground, the mild bite of a chill in the air just cool enough to be noticeable, tobacco entering my lungs, the buzz of a Sunday morning with no obligations, work done for now, bills paid, fridge full and the first rain of the year. I go back inside, turn the heat on, not because I’m cold, but because I feel like feeling the pleasure of the warmth I don’t need, yet enjoy.
