for me, this difference is this....
a sub has needs/wants and is allowed to express those freely. he/she is also allowed to feel pleasure ans express those fellings.
a slave has more restrictions on what can be said, thought or felt.
that's my 2 cents worth(if it's even worth that!)

I do not know andgrateful for the thread. I think maybe one grows? into a slave/ again I am not sure I would at this point consider myself a submissive If I enjoy the lifestyle and it continues does one grow into the role of slave. ?

A sub is simply that - submissive. They, for one reason or another, feel that they should be beneath their partner in order to feel safe. A sub will be willing to press his or her limits with the right Dom, but not normally do anything that they would not do otherwise.
A slave is someone who is so submissive that he or she see their significant other as a Mistress/Master and will often do things that they normally would not do in order to gain the approval of the Mistress/Master in question.

All right then to bring this back on topic.
There are different categories and levels to this and I’m not doing some wikipedia answer here, these are just my own personal take on things.
Category one:
Role-play this is the most common and involves Dominate and Subservient roles with or with out restraints. This is the sort of weekend kink that is most common. People play in this and it is never a serious thing. (Note: safety first as accidents happen and it would be terrible to have the restrained person unable to get free on their own if something happened to the other partner). This also may involve some light S&M such as spanking.
Category two:
Dom and Sub relationship that is more than just role-play this would involve a sweet surrender to the Dom in more than a casual fashion. This could also involve the complicated dance of various aspects of control. Bondage may be part of this or may not. S&M may also be part of this or not. The control and domination and the surrender and giving over of control is where this goes beyond the weekend role-play style. This might even start to touch on psychological domination, the slow seduction and loss of self, which is much harder to accomplish and takes time but is extremely powerful. The understanding as the two parties learn of each other that leads to when the Dom can look into the deepest darkest part of the Sub know the core and most secret desires and have those very things exposed.
Category three:
Master and Slave complete and total domination on a 24/7 framework. Of course by their very nature they are also by default Dom and Sub but in a much more all encompassing format. (not my speed at all)

I agree with both DominaKiara and DarkDesires.
And a sort of answer for newbieslave, im my opinion, of course. one must first become a sub before a slave, I believe at least that no one immediately wishes to give over total and complete control at first. Once having tested the waters, some walk away, some deepen the sub relationship, some find themselves wishing to delve still deeper into the total power exchange. Everyone has their own tastes, as it should be.

My opinion since, for the most part, this is my lifestyle of choice -lol-
A sub has the right to say no....the only right a slave has is to remain serving or leave all together...during a time of servitude they never are allowed to tell their owner no...while a sub is usually kept as a companion...most of the time as a boyfriend/girlfriend (from what I've seen)...an affectionate and servitude/worship mixture...while slaves are strictly servitude and strict control with no easy way out -lol-
Maybe I've got it wrong...but then again...this lifestyle is all about how you make it. It's something that you bend to your likes and dislikes and take some things from others to make it your own...but never feel pressured to follow the main stream of what people seem to feel is the "right" way. Oh well...go me! -dances, lmao-

I agree with Ivyryder's response. Let me add a few things.
First, let me say, AMD is really not the place to find a sub/slave nor a Dom. You might find em here, but you might also find em at the corner bar or the ropes section of a hardware store.
My 1st steps towards the lifestyle started here, with a so-called switch who was a wannabe and a lousy role-player and miserable fuck. Once I discovered the other sites (ALT, COLLARME, BONDAGE). this site became the place to come read blogs for entertainment.
I have learned alot about my submissiveness since then. I originally thought I was a switch. Not everybody can bring it out in me. I really am not submissive by nature at all. But with the right Dom, the right approach, I surrender my control,my will, I can be coaxed into submitting , and the results are purely magical.

Hm. Well, my experiences are kind of opposite from yours, lol...
I paid for ALT membership....in 6 months, I almost fell into 3 relationships with married women who denied and/or hid it till almost too late ( I dont play that shit )
Another who was just playing men for the attention alone, and the last...before I quit that site...was the biggest psycho I have ever met in person. We lasted a month living together, then it took me about 6 months to get away from her stalker ass. 
On collarme, I met this self styled Domme who claimed and claimed and claimed she was feeling the strong urge to become a sub and ohhhh...she wanted to explore that side of herself.....well, that lasted about 3 months of being together, during which she just wanted someone to lie to and manipulate, while helping drain my bank account for her shopping needs, like ebay and other places.
Never had more than a free membership on bondage, so I cant speak for experience there, because there's little one can do without paying.
But I am not bashing any of the sites, thats par for ANY website, whether it's here, there, or match dot com. Be careful wherever you go. Always take precautions.
And shox is right. This is not the best place to find either side, although there are some here. And I know several that are for real, here.
But I doubt you will find many real ones with the words Dom, Master, etc in their name, or ones that immediately start yelling bow, kneel, call me master, etc....all those things must be earned BY a Dom or Master, true ones really have no need for profile names as such. And if one asks for that kind of stuff right at first meet, walk away. Quickly.
I also agree with ivy. In a nutshell, a sub is a counterpart. a slave is a possession.
And shox also has the right of it. It takes a real Dom or Master, the REAL deal, to make it magical. But it also takes a real sub or slave to respond.
Definitely speaking from personal experience, I will not take upon myself a fledgling to train anymore. Far too many want to play at it, not for serious. And I am in it for serious.

That is very true, even in my limited experience, I have quickly learned to tell the tourists from the ones who are masters of the artform of playing light against dark, pain against pleasure and freedom against restraints.
Boasts and claims mean nothing.
One sure sign of a wannabe that I like to laugh about is the practice of keeping score in online chat.
I make a remark that is a bit bratty, and they count "one". Another remark and they count "two" They fantasize that they will someday get to whip my sweet ass the number of times that I have sassed at them. They keep counting and I roll my eyes, knowing that they have no idea how to deal with the likes of me.
