What constitutes a "real man"? That is a good question. How about being a forthright and stand-up guy who doesn't take unfair advantage of others, takes responsibility for his mistakes then takes actions to make amends for them. Kind of like a Gary Cooper movie.
Just do the right thing and you'll be a real man.

Definitely works for me. It's on my list of what makes a real man.

It sounds to me that a real man is nothing more than a real person - but with a penis.

A real man is himself no matter the situation.

Let me clarify what I meant...it seems that most of the charactistics of a real man that have been listed are the same characteristics most people would like to see in ANYONE. So, what makes a real man is everything that makes a decent person...

The next sound you hear will be me crumpling up the paper I was mostly putting x's on. Second child is looking appealing.

Ask everyone this then, We had charactors like John Wayne, Clint Eastwood, Marlon Brando, even Bruce Willis, they were men among males. Today who do we have? Johnny Depp in eye make up don't count, he's cute, but not in the manly way.....

Brad Pitt - Achilles
Russel Crowe - Gladiator
Billy Bob Thorton - Monsters Ball (okay, just had to throw that in for that hot sex scene :)
Wesley Snipes - Blade 1, 2, and 3
Keannu Reeves - anything, he walks on water
and let's not forget Christopher Reeve - Superman

Is that what you wanted?

I love Billy Bob Thorton in Bad Santa, can I make him my role model? When he told that woman "You ain't gonna shit right for a month" I spilled the popcorn and drink, and didn't complain!

Tom Cruise...too much of a freak. But he never did it for me in his hey day either. John Travolta, on the other hand, is like a fine wine. Much better with age.

Now, you've all named a few guys you consider a real man, but none of you actualy said anything about what constitutes a real man. Is it their behavior? Good looks? The way they act on the screen or in real life (god knows how they act in real life!)? Oh, one more thing Kianu Rives????? Give me a break! Bloody Kianu-I'm-too-dumb-looking-to-be-a-good-actor Rives???? Don't tell me that a good coat an a nice pair of shooes (MATRIX) constitutes a real man

Be nice, now, Giveitakiss...The Matrix may be his most famous film, but it doesn't even rank on my list of D list movies. Keannu is a real man - in film - because he is both tough and sexy, in general. Speed? Point Break? Yeah, tough and sexy...

Now, in my own defense - and that of a few others on this thead - several qualities were suggested and I wrapped it up by saying that those qualities were what we seek in anyone...not just a real man. Allow me to summarize ;)

forthright and stand-up
takes responsibility for his mistakes then takes actions to make amends for them
doesn't take unfair advantage of others
is honest, intelligent, has a sense of humor
a source of employment is good
has beliefs and is willing to stand by them
is nice to children and animals
sure of his sexuality
not afraid to show his sensitive side
is himself no matter the situation

And I'm adding:
respectful
mannerly
self-sufficient but able to ask for help if needed

It was CANU who wanted role-model/examples...yell at him! LOL

Role models? Actors? The biggest bunch of flakes on the planet and we wanna make role models of them? Horse puckey! I don't consider those people role models or real people at all.. sure some of them are droolworthy... but a role model?

You want a role model of manhood? Look at the guy serving soup in the soup kitchen, the guy who stops traffic so that the little kitten doesn't get squished.. the guy down the street who mows the lawn for the old lady next door. That's a REAL man! He isn't perfect and doesn't even try to be. He has feet of clay. He works for a living, he does stupid things just like anyone else. He cares for his children, not just to send a check every month. He treats everyone he meets with common courtesy if not respect. His hair might be growing on his back rather than his head, he may have a wart on his left hand.. he might even be shorter than a barstool. But he is a REAL man.
