Posts: 516 Well, I don't think you have to "shave" it, necessarily; most of the debris will fall off if you just give it a good, hard tap against the sidewalk.

The most important thing is to make sure it's oiled thoroughly before and after each use, keep it out of the rain (because it will rust if it gets wet) and make sure you keep it covered and dry in-between each use.
