I've done the distance game in the past...relocated to MN and within a year, I was left high and dry by the gal...while I went back home to file taxes, clear out the old house.
She up and left with her old B/F who probably has put her in the hospital by now...
Here I was, a year into a 'new' life and before I got 'home', I was already homeless and companionless on top of it all.
To make matters worse, she took my horses and everything she could get in the truck and trailer as well.
Distace for me is a 2 hour drive or less these days....I still have that abused feeling rolling around in my head.
But for the right lady, I probably would take the plunge and do some driving, just not on the first date....That would have to be at least 50/50 travel if only to prove her willingness to go the distance as it were.
My latest dating experience was wonderful, only she doesn't put any effort into staying in contact, but 'casually' asks if I am thinking about heading north for a visit(which means I stay in a motel).
If I drive a good distance to see someone, I'd expect to stay in the same house at least, and not incurr more costs just for the opportunity to spend some time with 'her'.....that's not a proper arrangement to me.
Want me to drive to see you?
You better have a spare room at the very least!
I'd give all of me to the right woman, and I do mean ALL of me.
I'm no longer playing the drooling idiot for any woman unless she's the ONE I am marrying!
And one more thing...she MUST want kids, even if she already has 1 or more, I don't.

I have driven 5 hrs each way for someone before - and she ended up not showing. Well, I was able to cancel the hotel reservation I had made for myself, found a campsite, and slept in a tent I always carry in my Jeep. I have done this a couple times, just to meet someone I had chatted and talked to online/phone and had been stood up each time. If she is more than 5 hours away, I would like her to meet me halfway.
