We were talking in my office the other day and thinking about all the advantages we had growing up over the younger crowd today. (yep, there was life before the Internet!)

One thing that came up was the lack of Drive -Inn Theatres (DIT).

Ok, Follow me here. How many of your remember the days of drive in theatres? Snack bar, sitting outside or on the hood of your car and watching a "big screen" movie?

Given that the modern car has so many luxuries with the extremely comfortable seats, and the great sound systems. the DIT would offer the sound over FM radio frequencies, and there would be nothing to hang onto the drivers side window.

Would a Drive Inn theatre be a sucess in todays climate?

I know there's not any sexy content here... unless your in the car at the Drive-in theatre, then it was hell's a poppin. But I would like to hear your opinions.

I would love to go to a drive inn but I think they would be trouble today. I barely remember going as a kid.

Thats my point. There a whole generation of Kids today that have NEVER been to a drive in.
We use to have a "Family night" once a month, where we would all get together and go to the drive in together, and watch a movie. It gave us an opertunity to reconnect with each other.
Today we are all so emersed in the "Immediate gradification" that comes with DVD , DVR, Movies on demand, VHS (Old school) but how many of our children, or some of the younger members here have experienced something like this?

Because of the esculating land values here in Florida, all of the Drive-inns have closed. The land was simply too valuable to pass up I guess.
Sad that the next generation will be denied this simple pleasure.

I'm so old school, I remember fondly drive-ins... and I still have a VCR, don't even own a DVD player. Yeah, they are clearer, but I'm not interested in replacing all my VHS movies. There really haven't been enough movies made in the last few years that have impressed me enough to want to own anyways. Most of the crap coming out now is just remakes of old movies or old TV shows. Damn shame.

We have a Drive In about 90 minutes from where I live and most weekends from Memorial Day to Labor Day you will find my kids and I at the Drive In. There is another one a couple of hours North of me and because they both have movies for 2 weeks one weekend we will hit one and the next weekend we will hit the other one. Admittedly most of the movies shown are classics... but my kids love going and there's nothing like watching "Chitty-Chitty-Bang-Bang" or "Take this job and shove it" on a screen that you can see clearly for half a mile in 3 directions.

We didn't have drive in movie theatres in the UK but I do believe that they could still work in this modern age.

I remember those days. Mom/Dad would take us in the station wagon, bowls of popcorn at hand, us kids in our jammies. We'd end up falling asleep in the back end.

Awe, the days are gone.

Yeah, I would always fall asleep during the second movie. I still find it hard to believe that I was ever so small that I could sleep on the floor in front of the back seat!

I never understood the appeal of a drive-in, but I guess that is because a comfortable car is essential to enjoying the experience. All my folks ever owned were station wagons--remember those?--and the drive-in theaters had disappeared by the time I was old enough to drive.

To return to the original question, it is sad but I think I am lucky that I grew up when this area was a much more biologically diverse. So many species of wildlife have vanished since then due to feral cats, pesticides and herbicides and urban sprawl. My nephews will never get to see the wild turkeys, walking sticks, praying mantises, chipmunks and other creatures that I knew as a boy.

I love the drive-in!!! We have a few here in WI and we try to go at least once a year. When I took my daughter for the first time, I made sure we did it all - got footlong hot dogs, popcorn, pizza, nachos...and she sat on the roof of the car through the sunroof...we saw "Finding Nemo"...It was so fun!!!

I don't think kids today will be doing anything much worse than what we did - I mean, I went tripping on acid (I was a kid - don't yell at me now), high on weed and coke, and (of course) we drank there. Do I want this to happen? NO! But if you think kids today aren't doing what we were doing - in parks, in cars, at malls, in basements and bedrooms...nothing has changed.

I'm not sure if drive-ins would be as popular now as they were years ago, but I can tell you that the line to get in each time we went was LONG. The place was PACKED. And I saw people doing what people do at drive-ins - set up lawn chairs, lay blankets down, talking, laughing, having fun, and getting lost trying to find their cars! I plan to organize a group outing this summer - friends and family all in a row. Haaaa! It's gonna be so FUN!

omg..we went to the DIT every weekend as a kid. There were 6 of us kids, and my parents would get with their friends there, and us kids would go hang out with our friends at the playground, i remember the screen looked so huge cause the playground was right at the bottom of it...i cant remember what movies we saw, but i remember we had alot of fun. Those were the good ole days.

Real estate is more expensive than it used to be, even in rural areas. From a purely financial standpoint, a drive-in theatre is a very inefficient use of space. The income per square foot ratio is very small. Given even a small amount of time, it would make more economic sense to take out a business loan, build yourself a superplex, sell awful popcorn at outrageous prices and show 20 bad movies simultaneously.

I think I was at like one in my life. Not too popular in NYC (was dating a gal in Buffalo at the time).
