AMD Improvements?

Okay, what one person considers an improvement another might consider a pain in the butt. Recently, there has been a lot of blogging about whether or not AMD has chosen wisely to reconfigure the look of their web page and some of the features they have added.

Now, don't get me wrong, I don't have any room to talk. I am not one of the paying members and I am pleased as punch that there's even a site like AMD. It offers tons of services for free in an adult atmosphere. I'm not complaining.

But of course, I have preferences, just like everybody else. One thing I'm not digging on to much is the recent home page change for the look of the blogs. I'm not sure what everyone else is seeing, but the thumbnails are gone, and because the new “list” format allows people to post more than one blog in a 24 hour period it seems that often I miss good blogs if I'm not online for a few hours. I just don't think the new format is as visually appealing as the old and it means people who are “fishing” or “advertising” can flood the people who took the time to write something right off the board.

Then there's the complaints I've seen about Kudos. True, it's a nice one-click way to give an opinion, but it's prone to abuses. People can kudo themselves, they can “spend” more than one kudo per blog, and people who are real system abusers and have more than one account can engage in shameless self-promotion. Maybe a one-click-per-post-per-user system might help with this, and not being able to self-click. Or maybe the kudo system doesn't add much at all.

Next, there's the pink 'n' blue color scheme for boys and girls. While it's a good idea on one hand, on the other there are some people that feel that adds to discrimination. Myself, I kind of like it, but mostly I feel neutral about it. It's not something I feel I need.

On the other hand, there is some things I feel might be better off on this system that could improve things overall. For one thing, there is a feature to identify yourself as a man or a woman. Well, what about couples or transgendered individuals? There are people that may want to identify themselves by those terms, or others that may want to search for people on those terms.

How about, if we're talking about the one-click thing, implementing a one-click abuse report? If an individual isn't using the site the way they should (advertising, fishing, linking to other sites to draw AMD clients away) how about a program where an initial abuse report to a blog sends an automated and anonymous warning letter to the user, however with repeated abuses the AMD administrators are alerted to the potential repeat abuser. Wouldn't that make their jobs easier?

Like I said. I'm not a paying customer and I am not on a build or programming team, so I don't really have the right to complain, but if any suggestion the AMD users make can help to improve things, then that's good. Anyone else want to offer their feedback?

I think that if a member were to block another member it kept his blog from being displayed on our home page, we (the members who both post and read substantive stuff) could weed out the frivalous without chasing away the other members.

Just a thought.

Dominus, I've been thinking for a few days about posting something akin to what you've shared above. Thanks a lot for being so articulate in voicing your thoughts on what I was considering as well.

Just to add my $.02.... I too wish to voice my displeasure with the change to the blog format on the home page. I enjoyed viewing it in the previous version where I could see the thumbnails and go from there. While I do like the fact that the current version takes us straight to the blog and not the person's profile and blog, thus boosting that person's "who has viewed me" count, I am hoping there can be some sort of compromise made where we can have the best of both worlds. AMD gurus, is this possible?

I do like the change to the pink and blue color format. I think it helps a bit in some respects. At least when one is surfing the forums and wondering who might have responded to what. For some reason it just helps me wander through thngs in the forums better. Again, just $.02.

Something outside of the remarks Dom made is an improved filter for mail, IM, and other forms of contact. I know this was discussed in a previous thread, but I would like to offer encouragement in making this better. Those who have friends here that might be from other areas than say the USA should be able to have a tag for those friends while still filtering for the stuff they want to avoid. Some here might enjoy filters to avoid mail from people that don't meet up with the criteria they establish on their profile. (i.e., looking for someone with only red hair, looking for someone who has tagged their profile as looking for cyber only, looking for someone petitie or muscular, just as a few examples.)

I to am not a donating customer, but these are a few things that I might agree with or would suggest that could offer some improvements to make this place migrate from an "A" to an "A+" in my book.

Thanks for listening.

Thank you guys for all the feedback! Keep it coming, we won't know what to change if you guys don't let us know.

Right now we're finishing up some work on the regular MD site, but we're going to be putting some time into this site pretty soon. So keep the ideas flowing, we'll be checking this thread often for ideas.

Some things on the agenda:

1. Improved profiles and questions
2. Add profiles for "couples"
3. Events/Party threads in forums (throw a get-togther, rsvp, see who's attending, discuss party, etc.)
4. Blog improvements (subscribe to blogs, better blog management, etc.)

Thanks to the help I got from AMD I found that all the Problems I was having here
was because of AOL. After leaving AOL and going to Yahoo, all my problems disapeared.
The fine staff here on AMD spent a lot of time researching my problems and trying to help me. What other site would do that for you. So I would like to praise
AMD and the Staff of AMD for having such a great site and for their support.
