I've often said to my friends when they tell me some of life's pleasures in dealing with people, “don't sweat it.” "People, who think they know everything, are especially irritating to those of us who do." It usually makes them feel a bit better about the whole fiasco and generally we have a good laugh. But often our interpretation of someone's verbal comments or our written words here on the web, can affect us emotionally, and we feel hurt, often occurring without a person even being aware that it has happened.
I often think of a story my dad once told me about a little boy with a bad temper.
His father gave him a bag of nails and told him that every time he lost his temper, to hammer a nail in the back fence. In the first day alone the boy had driven 37 nails into the fence. Then it gradually dwindled down. The boy discovered it was easier to hold his temper than to drive those nails into the fence. Finally the day came when the boy didn't lose his temper at all. He told his father about it and his father suggested to him that he now pull out one nail for each day he was able to hold his temper. The days passed and the young boy was finally able to tell his father that all the nails were gone. The father took his son by the hand and led him to the fence and said, “You have done well my son, but look at the holes in the fence." "The fence will never be the same." "When you say things in anger, they leave a scar just like this one."
A physically abusive situation can leave a physical wound and no matter how many times you say, I'm sorry, the wound will still be there." A verbal wound can be as bad as a physical one.
I value my friendships, as friends are a rare jewel indeed. They make me smile and encourage me to succeed. They lend an ear, they share a word of praise and they always want to open their hearts to me. (But they always want ME to buy the beer; at least MOST of them are cheap dates)
