"We urge China not to implement its threat to take action against aircraft that do not identify themselves or obey orders from Beijing," the statement said.

Hagel declared that China's announcement "will not in any way change how the United States conducts military operations in the region."

He added that the United States is conveying its concerns to China "through diplomatic and military channels" and is in close consultation with Japan and other U.S. allies in the region. He reaffirmed the longstanding U.S. policy that Article V of the U.S. Japan Mutual Defense Treaty applies to the Senkaku Islands. Article V states that in the case of an armed attack against Japanese territory, both the U.S. and Japan "would act to meet the common danger" in accordance with "constitutional provisions and processes."

Perhaps the state department inadvertently sent you a copy of the weather report for your area rather than the text of the directive. It stated that the "air defense identification zone" issued by China covers a wide area of the East China Sea between South Korea and Taiwan that includes the Tokyo-controlled islands known as the Senkakus to Japan and Diaoyous to China. China claims they control the territory while Japan has ownership. China released specific rules of identification and conduct for planes flying over that territory. The US has warned them not to initiate any military procedure as any action would invoke a treaty with Japan for automatic reprisal. Obama is still in the process of finding someone to read the treaty to him and find a copy of the constitution.

Except for the last sarcastic sentence, I agree with the comment above. As I said in your other blog a lot of this involves several small islands that are insignificant except for they can represent points of land and, by extension, territorial waters.

I wonder how much of this has to do with fishing rights. The practices of the Japanese commercial fishing industry are well known.

More importantly, there is extreme animosity between the two nations. I had a Chinese American colleague that said, "The only Asians that like Japs are other Japs."

Much of this has to do with nationalism and there have been emotional issues in the past few years, notably Japan's refusal to acknowledge what is known as the rape of Nanking in 1937. I would go so far as to say that this and other WW II atrocities resonates with the Chinese people only to what has been passed down to affected people feel from the nazis and the arab/Israeli conflicts.

Here is some more on it. The Chinese zone also includes claims of South Korea and Taiwan.
