I know Christians who tell their children the family dog will not go to Heaven because animals have no soul. These are the people who make a game out of slaughtering defenseless animals in the forest and a sport of pulling innocent fish out of the ocean, because…after all, they have no soul and, by the way, “I’m going to eat it”…as if what becomes of the carcass is an excuse to proudly pose, smiling beside the corpse as a triumphant warrior. No soul. Who cares?

A little while back, these same folks regarded black people as soulless. One could whip them, rape them, trade them like property and sleep like a baby at night because the black humans had no more soul than a pet dog.

What’s changed -- the identity of the creatures without souls. The ethic remains intact. The less you look like US, the less you’re worth.

This is a round-about way to make a point of something entirely unrelated to souls, animals, fish, race or the evil nature of the European white man come-to-rape-the-North American-continent. An ethic; the quintessential kernel of meaning that is central to the human activity that surrounds it…an ethic…can take many forms without changing at all.

Recently, I was admonished by a member that:

the Constitution is a living document. It was written for an isolated agrarian nation sitting on the edge of a vast, unexplored continent. Necessity requires that it be reinterpreted to reflect the realities faced by a modern super power in the 21st century.

All of that is true. In fact, the people who delivered the document built in a mechanism to make the alterations necessary in recognition of the way in which passing time can change the reality American’s face.

However, the framers made it exceedingly difficult to change the document. Why? If it was so universally understood that change would be necessary as time passed, wouldn’t the need be met easier if the document were easier to change? Of course, it would.

The hoops through which one must jump to bring about change in the U.S. Constitution are there to protect the ETHIC. Quick fixes for social trends would breed manifold rewrites and amendments. With each such alteration the underlying ethic of The Constitution falls into jeopardy.

The constant, unchanging, unassailable ethic; that grand idea bequeathed by the long-dead architects of the American dream is LIBERTY – liberty from the European tyrants, liberty from the Church, liberty from the notion that a civilization must be built from the top down and that all individuals have an obligation to shape their lives according to a master plan for the society. Instead, we Americans determined long ago that no prize was satisfying enough to trade our individual liberty for, or the rights that protect that freedom.

While the particulars of The Constitution may change as expanding technology and science demand, it is essential that such change does not result in a loss of this ethic which is the fulcrum upon which the American IDEA balances. Let no value, neither wealth nor poverty, neither success nor failure, neither inequity nor inequality ever rise to such importance on the American agenda that we would sacrifice liberty to remedy the appetite for it. In so doing, we will have lost ourselves, our heritage and the magic spark that has lit our way.

When we set out to change the Constitution with amendments or court decisions that endanger that ethic, we are not using the procedure for change in the way the framers intended. Instead, we have left the realm of well-intentioned patriots in pursuit of a profitable future and joined the ranks of traitors who, perhaps unintentionally but certainly in deed, prosecute the demise of our empire.
