If you’d asked me last week why we shouldn’t sanction homosexual marriages, I’d have said because the instant the Court does so, the entire media will frenzy. Nothing will be taboo. Very quickly, it will not only be “okay” to be homosexual, it will become socially compulsory. Your right to be armed does not include possession of nuclear warheads as they threaten the survival of mankind. Some things trump other things. Where's the line?

Would the media really "frenzy"? See this week’s cover of The New Yorker, displaying a picture of Sesame Street’s Burt and Ernie in a homosexual pose, cuddling on the sofa while watching the Supreme Court on TV. Holy Pope Smoke!

And what’s wrong with that?

There is a difference between good and bad, even for people like me who are not superstitious and refuse to allow ghosts (holy or otherwise) to define morality. The difference is simple and universal. Its fulcrum is SURVIVAL.

That which assists the human species in the effort to survive is “good”. That which brings harm to the process of survival and, therefore propagation, is bad.

Perhaps we could survive without heterosexual unions, but that is an issue outside the criteria that must be used to define good and bad, so the argument about test tube babies or whether there's some other way is irrelevant to the question.

Gawd bless all the human beings who will never be born and all the gene pools that will vanish because of this SC ruling.

Well, J1958, I don't know about you, but no Supreme Court decision or perceived social compulsion could make me get a woody for a man. The attraction isn't there and it's never going to be.

And further, I have no doubt that the vast majority of the population will continue to be attracted solely to the opposite sex. I am completely confident that your irrational fear that procreation and heterosexuality can be wiped out by a court decision is completely unfounded. So buck up, big guy.

You seem to be of the opinion that people can be convinced to change their sexual orientation. It leads me to wonder... are you a white knuckle heterosexual? Do you fight the urge to give in to some inner voice that tells you a dick in your ass might be just the thing? Do you now hear the voice of Justice Kennedy whispering softly to you, "hey J1958, it's all right... go for it."

Well, I've never been troubled by that, and therefore I tend to believe people are wired one way or the other, and don't change their sexual orientation based on a court decision. But I can kind of see why someone who has to fight off homosexual urges might believe otherwise.

I don't think the old fellow above can see the nuance of your blog. 'Nuance' for his benefit I will define.....' a subtle distinction or variation'. He sees things as black or white and shadings in your meaning seem to cause him some difficulty in comprehension. When one cannot discern the meaning it's inevitable false assumptions will follow, hence his attack on you personally. Unfortunately it is the prime example of why intelligent blogs are so infrequent on the site. 'Dumbing' it down is the main course on a starving site.

countonit...I'm glad you posted that thought. It calmed me down after reading the preceding comment by a perpetually flat tire with no visible means of mental support..

Don't you get sick of nonsense like that post? "Silly" has not been funny since the Three Stooges retired.

That is not true and you know it as that did not happen in other countries that sanctioned it some time ago, i guess the right wing of this country will be crying the sky is falling now because the supreme court voted this way but trust me no one is going to hold a gun to your head and tell you that you now have to become gay,

What countries? How long ago? Social change and evolving values do not change 5-minutes after a Supreme Court ruling. Come back 100 years from now and tell me about the result of this decision.

Moreover, The media and its relationship with the citizenry is a very different animal in this country than it is in others. As you will see, if you read my post carefully, the subject is the media and what it is going to do with this decision by The Court. The New Yorker edition I cited is offered as an example.

Remember this post a year from now. Reassess. Gay marriage has been lobbied by filmmakers in subtle nuance since the beginning of Hollywood. One might have guessed when we watched James Dean practically make love to a dying Sal Mineo in "Rebel Without a Cause" we'd wind up where we are now. What's the matter with you people?

Looks like another one missed the point entirely. Seriously, it's OK to not comment on a blog when you don't understand the context in which it was written. Selecting one segment or sentence that's being used to make a relevant point and taking it out of that context exposes your stupidity and any further credibility.

I don't think the old fellow above can see the nuance of your blog.

That would be because there really is no nuance in his blog. Even as he defends it, he expresses the belief that the effect of the decision will be to turn straight people gay:

Tell me, J. When you first saw that scene as a youngster, was that the moment when your confusing thoughts about a tender moment with another male began?

I maintain my original point. A person who believes that straight people can be turned gay because of some legal or cultural influence would seem to be acknowledging that they themselves could be gay if they wished to be.

So give it up, man. You know you want it - you just drive up to DC, head for DuPont Circle, and start your new life. Who knows, you might meet up with your new friend Cocktail there.

Daffy bitch. I would hold this position on gay marriage regardless of my personal orientation. Logic suffers in an agenda-driven environment. Peddling a philosophy that seeks to justify one's personal propensities is for the weak of mind.

My own humanity could be as twisted as a corkscrew and I would still acknowledge TRUTH where I see it -- not matter how it might paint me as an individual.

I don't doubt that. My suggestion that you are having to hold back an itch to head for the bathhouse with the boys is based on your belief that culture can turn people into homosexuals.

To have that belief, you must also believe that you yourself could change your orientation if you so choose. And for you to be able to change your orientation, an attraction to other men must be there to begin with.

In my case, I know for a fact I could not develop an attraction to men. It just isn't in my wiring. And if you can say the same thing, that should convince you that there is not a danger that others will decide to become gay based on cultural changes.
