It thundered outside!

We had thunderstorms today! Of course, with more rain, comes more flood warnings. Ahhh...springtime in Michigan.

The other day was just beautiful outside, I was outside with the dogs and enjoying it. Of course, I see how much work my backyard needs, not looking forward to that chore. I'm waiting for the rain to stop long enough so the ground can dry out some and not be so mucky. It's just not fun trying to do yard work when the ground is so soft and mushy.

It's been so great not hearing the furnace running so much these past few day. I noticed the other day a pair of morning doves eyeing an old planter I have hanging on my deck. It's the same one a dove a few years ago used for a nest. I'm hoping these two will do so this year. To be able to watch a bird nest was quite the experience. And watching that little one grow up and take it's first flight was awesome to see.

I had wanted to get materials to build a raised flower bed alongside my front porch, but it looks like cash will be a little tight for that project, so I might put that off till next year. Then again, maybe if I keep a look out for scrap pieces of wood being tossed, that would save some money. Maybe I'll still give it a try. I also need to seed my backyard, between the dogs and the weather, got some spots that are more mud than grass right now. Again, I need it to stop raining long enough for the ground to dry out some. It's quite saturated right now. The old saying, "April showers bring May flowers", yeah, those had better be some spectacular flowers when this is over. Not complaining, hell no I'm not. I'd rather have this than the snow. One meteorologist that used to work for our local tv station said that the rain to snow ratio was one inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow. We've had almost 4 inches of rain over the past week...that would be a lot of snow. So, I'm good with the saturated ground cause the idea of dealing with 40 plus inches of snow just doesn't sound fun!

Hope everyone is enjoying their evening.

We started getting rain last night that lasted through overnite. Nice steady rain early on. More may be on the way Friday.

I may not like the cold weather anywhere, but around here, we usually don't have a lot of snow. the worst I've seen so far was the first winter we were here. That was when I spent two weeks waiting for the road crews to clear this one. the snow wasn't bad, about 10 to 12 inches, it was the ice that had everything shut down. And i wasn't about to try to make it into Cape Girardeau where my truck was. And we are in a water shortage around here.

It's supposed to rain pretty heavy here Friday night and Saturday morning. The days have been in the 60's which for me is perfect temperature for yard work; which there is plenty of :-) I raked a section of leaves away from a huge rhododendrum only to find plastic on the ground. Normally that would be a good thing except there is no dirt on top!? Today I will go to my brothers and get a trash bag full. I want to plant my pansies there before the rain comes! Hope they didn't freeze overnight...hmm, better go check them!

We had a lot of rain, lightening and thunder over night. Sometime after midnight I woke up horrified... hail I visualized my seedlings be ravaged and the garden destroyed But in less than ten seconds it stopped and the morning light revealed no damage to my seedlings

I had wanted to get materials to build a raised flower bed alongside my front porch, but it looks like cash will be a little tight for that project, so I might put that off till next year

I use cinder blocks a lot for mine and can find them here and there. It may be too late this year, but just keep your eyes open and you'll find them. Usually they can be found where a building has been torn down. Over the course of two months I found over two dozen for my garden beds

One meteorologist that used to work for our local tv station said that the rain to snow ratio was one inch of rain equals 10 inches of snow.

I'm not so sure about that. On our front porch there is a pail about 15 inches high and 12 inches in diameter. It is in the open and is in constant shade. When we got all of our snow in March the pail became filled with snow. When it melted there was over four inches of water in the pail. But one of the two snow storms last month was "wet" snow.

It's just a ratio, and as this meteorologist explained, when considering factors like evaporation and wind blowing, it's hard to pinpoint an exact measurement. Besides, I would say the guy who studied this and got the degree in it would know what he's talking about. And besides, he's a native from Minnesota. Oh yeah, and he loves winter.
