Chapter 7

The day before, Friday, I kept hearing motorcycles every little bit in the distance. None ever came close enough for me to really see them but Hogs, you could hear them a mile away with their stack pipes and often without baffles. I swear they could bust out windows when they were revved tight and fired like bombs on their way down!

But they sure kept me nervous all day. That night, they came closer to the trailer and I tensed every time I heard one, expecting it to rumble to a throaty stop at my door. None did…but I didn’t get much sleep and those motorcycles kept it up all night. What the hell was going on anyway? My nerves grew more tense as the hours ticked by.

Saturday morning, it was still pre-dawn when I finally filled the coffeepot and set it to perking. It’s soft, rythmic coughing soothed my nerves and the smell made my mouth water. I hopped in the shower and let the hot water pound my tense muscles ‘til they begin to relax. The hot water through my long hair was like a scalp massage and the nagging headache that I’d had for 2 days eased to just on the fringes of being noticeable.

I heard the coffeepot huff to it’s last heaving sighs and I couldn’t wait. A quick dry-off with a big towel to start then wrapping it around me, I headed for that first lucious cup of coffee of the morning. Black today…and strong. Maybe the caffeine would jar my nerves a little but it was a different jarring than wondering where Corbin was. Caffeine jags were stimulating and made the brain alert. I needed alert badly!

If I hadn’t mentioned it before, my trailer wasn’t in a park…money makes a lot of things possible. No, it was out on Basin Rd…sorta way out. I wanted country and lots of it. Another one of my ‘almost mountains’ was my backyard, or close enough anyway. From my patio, it rose to the heavens or so it seemed to me.

I called my mountain, ‘Desiderata’ after the writing of Max Ehrmann. It says it all for me, ending with…

…You are a child of the universe no less than the trees and the stars; you have a right to be here. And whether or not it is clear to you, no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should. Therefore be at peace with God, whatever you conceive Him to be. And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul. With all its sham, drudgery and broken dreams, it is still a beautiful world. Be cheerful. Strive to be happy. (Max Ehrmann)

Yes, to me, Max had it right. So Mt. Desiderata it was.

A few swallows of coffee to get my blood pumping then I changed into warm clothes. The weather had cooled and mornings were nippy. Then I headed to the patio. I wondered if I thought about it, if I could figure out what the gang at Pete’s were up to. It was gonna be a long day, I could just feel it in my bones.

A trail cut a zig-zag along Desiderata, about halfway up. It dipped and climbed and most places it couldn’t be seen within the trees. But here and there, it ran in the open. Now I could see where some of the motorcycle traffic was coming from. At about thirty minute intervals, a bike slowly rumbled along the trail. I thought that was strange. It seemed it alternated with bikes passing on the road in front of my trailer. And there was more car traffic than usual, too.

Then I got it…I was being watched. Not by Corbin’s creeps, but by my buddies from Pete’s! I could’ve cried…well, dammit, I did cry! So this is what they’d been up to, huh? I had to chuckle…and they thought sittin’ here and watching the unusual traffic like it was Grand Central Station that I couldn’t figure it out? I thought about waving to them all, but I didn’t wanna spoil their little secret.

This watching went on all day. I could tell by the vehicles that everyone took a shift and they kept it going steady. But I never saw Jake’s car or his Hog…where was Jake? I had tried to reach Jake by phone but no luck there. Worry tightened those relaxed muscles. I couldn’t sit still so I threw myself into cleaning like a mad woman. By evening, all I could do was pace the floor like a caged animal.

Then darkness fell and a throaty motorcycle had stopped at my door. It idled for several minutes…Corbin getting a thrill out of stoking my fear? Worse yet, when it went quiet, nothing happened. I waited…

And waited….
