When Darkness Comes

Chapter 1

The flames burned low. The logs glowed orange and undulated in everchanging waves of intensity. It didn’t matter that they weren’t real…they looked real enough. They produced no heat but that was ok, too.

Nighttime had invaded the evening’s soft twilight and now the fire’s glow was all that held back the pitch black darkness around me. I could feel my mobile home rock and sway as the wind howled and my roof rumbled.

Wrapped in a soft comforter, I drew it tight around me and curled tighter into my recliner. I waited…

My name is Brianna…Brianna Kaye Weatherholt…daughter of Gordon G. Weatherholt. The ‘G’ doesn’t stand for anything, it’s just a ‘G’. Grandmother Weatherholt just thought it made her son’s name look more dignified and important. In the Weatherholt family, dignity and importance is a must.

I live in Corrigan, a medium sized town in the middle of nowhere in a state that has more wilderness then anything. Grandfather Weatherholt is the descendent of Joseph J. Weatherholt who founded Corrigan back in the late 1800’s. Where the name Corrigan came from, I do not know, but the Weatherholt family is the center of Corrigan with my father, Gordon G. being not only the mayor but also the only judge for many miles around.

Kathleen LeAnn Ratcliff Weatherholt, my mother, is the only doctor that counts in this town, or so it is said. She is the head of the board of directors at our only hospital and is a no nonsense kind of person…I know, she raised me in a no nonsense kind of way.

She is a Ratcliff and right up there with the Weatherholts in Corrigan’s list of who’s who. They are the elite of the elite. Their estates are side by side on the north end of town and are separated by acres and acres of woodland.

This woodland was my enchanted forest when I was a child. I spent hours and hours playing among the trees and swimming in the hidden lake…in the buff…that nestled deep in the forest and snuggled up against the base of what I considered a mountain. It really wasn’t a mountain but in my mind it was big enough to qualify and that’s all that counted.

I am not an only child. I fit between an older brother, Kyle and a younger sister, Darlene. No, that isn’t right. I don’t fit between them. Fact is, I don’t fit at all. I am a disgrace to the Weatherholt family.

I am Brianna, the child who prefers to live in a trailer to living in luxury. Brianna, who prefers to wander the forest rather than socialize at the Grey Goose Country Club. Brianna, who associates with the low lifes and would rather play pool than golf. Brianna, who would rather drink beer with a whiskey chaser now ‘n then to drinking martinis.

Yet I am a Weatherholt and not to be forsaken. Money is the lure, provided monthly and generously in hopes of bringing me back into the fold.

Money buys a lot. I fill out a sweater and tight jeans and money made that possible. That was all I needed. My face is exquisite with the Weatherholt and Ratcliff genes. I was the senior prom queen and could have gone on to probably win the state beauty contest if I’d have been interested, but I wasn’t. I was more interested in tying up my long, thick dark hair, saddling up my horse and taking to the woodlands.

I was more interested in putting on some leather and riding my Harley to the other side of town.

I was more interested in Corbin Porter. Dark, handsome, muscled and mean as a junkyard dog.

Now I could hear his Harley comin’ in on the wind. Revving up and downshifting as it rumbled and growled to a stop just outside my door.

I shivered and pulled the comforter tighter. Fear drifted through my bones but it couldn’t defeat the heat that exploded between my legs. Corbin was like that. His very essence was sex, heat, explosions and for the life of me, I couldn’t resist him…even when I knew the danger that wasn’t far away.

The waiting was over…he was here…
