This is an audience participation thing. I hope it piques people's interest enough to participate in answering the bolded question below. I will provide the answer tomorrow as a comment in this blog.
In the mid-seventies when I was in college (my degrees are essentially in communication) a prof. told us that there were 27 distinct accents in the Dallas/Fort Worth, Texas area. It was true in the mid-seventies before the Metroplex, as we call it, grew together to be a metropolis of six million people with immigrants from other states initially and later, the world. At that time you could talk to somebody and determine what part of Dallas,Fort Worth, or smaller town they were from
The same prof. asked our class a question and no one got it right. I have asked people this also and nobody gets it right:
What American city that is large enough to have a professional sports team is considered to have the perfect American accent?
