Christmas is over, now onto New Years

I hope everyone had a nice Christmas this year. Mine was good, although I had noticed Mom seemed "tired". I commented on it to my sister, who then told me that Mom's "tired" had to do with this condition called "hyponatremia" which is low sodium levels in the blood. Hyponatremia

Ok, so, for those who don't know..Mom had fallen and broke her hip back in November, and had also cut her leg and needed stitches. She had to have hip replacement surgery, and was recovering from it quite well. Her therapist and her home visiting nurse had said she should be walking good with a cane by Christmas. Mom has been on prescription meds for a few years now..I don't know all of them, but I do know one of them is for high blood pressure. So, anyway, she recently had a skin graft done where her leg had been cut. I don't know the full details here, but, my sister said that Mom had also been prescribed sodium tablets because a blood test had shown that the sodium levels are low. Dr. called in the prescription for Mom, Dad called the pharmacy (Rite Aid) to see if it was ready to be picked up. They claimed they never got a call for the prescription. Dad called the Dr about it, Dr said he would call it in again, then call Dad and let him know it's been called in. Dr called, told Dad it was called in, give it an hour. So Dad did, and again, he was told there was no call. By now, he's hot...and by that I mean that Irish/German/French blood is boiling overtime, and he drove down to Rite Aid to see what was going on. He gets there, and then finds out that the prescription is actually an over the counter medication. He was pissed. He asked them "and not one of you could have told me that when I called?" And I don't know what the reply was, but, bottom line, Mom had gone a couple of days without these tablets because neither the pharmacy nor the doctor bothered to tell Dad this was something over the counter.

So, Dad finally gets these tablets, Mom takes them. Yet, seems like they are not helping. So, Christmas day, I had to work, got out at 6:30, got to my parents house about 7:30, noticed Mom seemed "tired". And when my sister told me all of this, I had asked if anyone had called Mom's visiting nurse. And my sister said "not yet". I asked why, and my sister said that Mom didn't want the nurse's holiday ruined. What????? Excuse me...but, at 67 yrs old, and her health issues, being nice because it's Christmas kinda takes a back seat. Anyway, since Mom was being Mom, I told my sister to call that nurse bright and early in the morning, which she did, and when she told the nurse what was going on, the nurse told her to get Mom to the ER NOW. So, come to find out, not only were the sodium levels dangerously low, but so was Mom's blood pressure. I talked to my sister last night, and Mom is doing much better, her appetite is back in full force, but the doctor is keeping her in the hospital to monitor her prescriptions. I told my sister that I don't give a damn what Mom says, when it comes to health issues, call that nurse. It's her job, she's on call 24/7, even on holidays. An emergency is an emergency.

So...anyway, I'm going up to see Mom here in a few. I'm really hoping 2013 turns out to be a better year.

Ya know....I swear it seems like that's a phrase said every year.

Oh yeah...fiscal cliff...I hear on the news that the President, House Speaker, and others are at this moment "discussing" it. Maybe they will come to an agreement before time runs out?

The aging of parents is one of those things that many of us deal with 24/7/365 with apprehension if the phone rings at an odd hour.

My dad will be 92 in February if he lives that long. He doesn't know who I am and is just a bag of bones. The man I knew my entire life no longer exist for all intents and purposes. The upside is that he is very docile and contented as, in his case, ignorance is indeed bliss

I'm sorry to hear your Mom isn't feeling well. How well I know TIRED! I'm waiting until after the first of the year and hoping I will have full coverage insurance, then I'm gonna have a full check up. I'm using pain pills now to control the pain in my hip and knee until I can get them checked out.

I shouldn't be this tired but after all, it's the holidays...and I went through Christmas with a really bad head cold. I feel better today but bullhead that I am, I wanted my computer room rearranged so I tackled that today. I love the new setup but I still have lots of stuff to put away...all those details that are a headache.

I'm doing everything I can to start my new year off the way I want it. That means (to me anyway) getting my home organized from one end to the other and cleaned. I'm making good headway.

I just want it done so I can rest 'n play the rest of the winter when all is quiet.
