Chapter 3

For several years, Bella sat on an old stump along the outter edges of the forest and listened. Her forays weren’t nightly, most nights the voices were silent. But when the moon was full, they beckoned…sometimes every night for nearly a week. She’d never gotten caught leaving the house, not once!

But in the fall, the calling was more often, more persistent.

Halloween was Bella’s favorite time of year. Bella felt special as the leaves began to burst into glorious colors. Every year at Halloween, those voices were able to entice Bella deeper into the forest. She often wondered why she was able to find her way about. Her pathway never seemed lit yet she could see where she was going and she always knew the way back. She wondered, yet she never really questioned it, it was just the way it was and as a child, it didn’t seem to matter anyway.

Bella sometimes snuggled deeper into her warm bed, not wanting to leave it yet she couldn’t resist. She sometimes wondered what was the purpose of all these treks, these callings? But she always answered to whomever…or whatever…was calling her. They became familiar, friendly…comforting, so she continued, year after year. And year after year, she found herself venturing deeper into the forest. The beauty of it was astounding! There were rippling streams and deep pools with cold, clear water that was often fed by rushing waterfalls. She also knew there were creatures of the night, some dangerous, following her every move yet she felt safe. Every morning after venturing into the forest, she’d awake feeling rested and as though her night had been nothing more than a dream.

But it all changed the summer she turned eighteen. On August 24th, the eve of her birthday, the voices called and Bella responded. But this time, there was a different feeling, a hushed, soft sound to the voices. As she entered the forest, somehow, she felt she wasn’t allowed past an old fallen tree where she had spent many hours as a child, playing alone and reading books…her quiet hours she’d called them. So now she sat and waited.

For awhile, the voices murmured and fussed. For the first time ever, she felt their actual presence…a thickness of the air, the subtle wafting and changing of air currents and temperature. Briefly, they seemed to close in around her, almost feeling like they were touching her, patting her. Then the feeling slowly receded and so did the voices until all was still and quiet.

Bella sat for awhile, mulling over what had just happened and what it meant. The air was warm and sticky and suddenly Bella felt tired, very tired and her bed in her cool room in the loft is what beckoned her now.

Rising and stretching with a yawn, Bella turned to the path home. That’s when she saw the dark shadow and knew she wasn’t alone…
