Chapter 2

Bella hadn’t always been feared and shunned. As a child, she had many friends. They ran throughout the village doing all the things that children do to entertain themselves. She laughed, ran in the wind and rain, splashed in mud puddles and delighted in the winter snow.

Hot summer days, free from school, she and her friends roamed the streets of the village. They played hard, getting dirty in the dust of the playground, running home in tears with skinned knees and occasionally, finding themselves sitting on a stool in the corner for some kind of naughtiness.

Throughout each summer, for Bella, the nights seemed to be alive with unseen voices that called to her, beckoned her…whispers, whispers, whispers. Words she didn’t understand in her head but her spirit stirred and wanted to dance with the shadows.

The black, velvety sky wrapped her in its secrets of the night. She peered nightly through her bedroom window, tucked high in the loft, to watch the moon begin as a slice of light, then grow, night after night, to a fullness, low and orange, huge on the horizon; then rise into an inky black sky to shine like a silver orb casting long shadows that seemed to dance with delight.

The summer Bella turned twelve, she succumbed to the whispers. Slipping silently from her loft, she was but a shadow on the stairsteps as she seemed to float downwards and through the house to the backdoor where she disappeared into the night. The path from the cobblestone steps led to the forest and it welcomed her with unseen, watchful eyes.

That first night, she stood just within the treeline and listened, unable to discern those voices and from whence they came. They beckoned but when she stood amongst the trees, the soft wind carried them in all directions. Bella was confused and fear rippled across the back of her neck…this wasn’t the same as listening to those voices from her loft window. Now they seemed to surround her like a black, heavy cloak. Then a flickering of light, first here, then there. Yes, the moon…it was now over the forest and as her eyes adjusted to the darkness, its silver rays cut through the leaves to send small beams of light to the forest floor. Leaves, cut loose by the shifting winds danced and darted, then drifted to their final resting place.

Bella had been warned from the time she was a very small child, not to venture deep into the forest. No one ever really said why, except that there were stories of awful things happening to those who didn’t heed these warnings. Legends had been built on these stories and they varied amongst the grownups, as most stories do. Some were believers, some not, yet no one, not even the unbelievers, ventured very far past the treeline.

Now Bella thought of those stories, those legends. Most involved spirits and ghosts, witches and lost souls. But Bella was too young to understand any of it. She just knew of the voices, calling, calling…..

That night, long ago, when Bella ventured to the forest, she’d gone without thinking. She’d heard the voices for so long that she’d felt like they were unseen friends, whispering secrets that she couldn’t understand…she only wanted to understand. Not until she’d entered the forest did she feel any fear. Maybe it was the sudden sensation of cold fingers creeping slowly up her legs, tickling and trailing goosebumps; maybe that’s when she realized she was no longer in the warmth of her loft.

That first night, Bella turned and ran…ran to her loft, jumped in her bed and pulled the thick comforter over her head. She didn’t want to hear those voices and for the rest of that night, she hadn’t. As her heart stilled, she slept.

But they returned, again and again…beckoning, beckoning…

Wow....that gave me chills.

And not just because it's cold here either! I don't know if it's reaching you there in Indiana, but here in Michigan we've been affected by Sandy. Yesterday Lake Huron got rocked! It had some huge waves!

Waves on Lake Huron

That link is a little slideshow of the waves on Lake Huron, taken in Port Sanilac Michigan which is roughly 70 miles due east of me. Even here, we had high wind advisories up until about 7pm tonight, and those winds were howling last night, and we got a mix of rain/sleet/snow overnight. It is now calming down here. Although we didn't get hit anywhere near as hard as they did in NJ. A friend of mine lives out that way and I'm hoping he's doing ok.
