Pathetically poor...

Doncha just hate it? Being poor I mean. Obviously Uncle Sam doesn't give a damn...let them try living on my SS!!!

But occasionally, I catch a break and auctions are often a Godsend to those who have to scrape by month by month.

Of course, I do buy some stuff that I wouldn't otherwise spend money on and sometimes I buy something that I need but coulda waited but yanno, when the price is right, I can't see passing up the opportunity.

My quilt on my bed is getting worn and will eventually need replaced, I'd say after one more laundering. My bedroom is country so another quilt would be in order...and they can be expensive! But I found a beautiful one that was practically new and got it for $25.00. It woulda cost me probably $70 at least in a store.

All summer, I've been on the lookout for Christmas presents for my family and auctions/rummage sales are full of treasures. My daughter collects old gravy ladles. I already have several I've found over the summer and this auction last week, I found several more. There was nearly a full set of Rogers silverware which is a good brand and they are old. Some have engraved on the back that says they are the original Rogers. She doesn't know it yet but she's gettin' the whole set whether she wants it or not... She can keep it or give it away.

Over the months I've found lots of toys 'n books for the great grandkids. I found a Budweiser lamp for the other daughter and her husband. She is the one hard to find stuff for...she collects Unicorns and they must be rare as hen's teeth...haven't seen any anywhere. So now I just have the grandkids to find stuff for but I don't know what they really like or need so I will give them gift cards if need be.

But I really lucked out at that auction last week. When it was over, as we were gathering our loot to load, there was a couple that had bought the freezer and they didn't want the contents...and they gave it to me! There was very little that I had to toss because of freezer burn. I pried apart hamburger patties and got 2 gallon freezer bags full of them. There's a few small steaks and a pork loin. Some sort of either pork or chicken pieces...a surprise meal when I cook them wouldn't you say? Lastly, a box of pie crust and a loaf of bread. But I doubt if I have to buy meat all winter...and it was all free!!!

We're having a "cold snap" for August...probably in the high 60's right now and what I call big ole snow clouds. The sky is full of them and it's rather breezy out...I just love it after this scorching summer. But it looks like the 90's will be back late next week...

With the rain we've had, my fall flowers are going crazy now. My marigolds overfloweth their little fence. My mum bushes are huge!!! They are beginning to bloom and when they are in full bloom, they will be gorgeous. My summer flowers are perking up too...just goes to show ya, they prefer natural watering instead of this damn city water that smells like bleach! The grass is once again emeral green and growing fast. The leaves on the trees don't look wilty and drooping. Summer's last hurrah...

As summer winds down, I'm already gearing myself up for winter. I know, I know, it's still early for that but if I start shifting my system NOW for cold weather then I can sorta fool my body into accepting it when it gets here. Last night, my friend and I went out to eat and stopped at Wally world. It was blowing and raining, a misty kind of rain and it was the kinda cold that just seeps into the bones. We were both going "brrrrrrrrrrrrrr!!!" and grumbling about the cold. I told her, "It's a little early to be gettin' so worked up over a little chilly weather, isn't it???" We decided it was just practice for the real thing!

I just stepped outside for a smoke, the sky is clearing and the sun is out...looks like it'll be a beautiful day after all. That's good because I sorta got sucked into going to a cookout tonight at a couples house. One just simply talks too loud and the other leans to drinking too much and can get weepy But they're good people for the most part with good hearts.

Guess I'd better get some housework done...I've dawdled away enough time for now. Wishing all a good weekend.

what a great surprise on the freezer contents! have fun at the cookout and I love unicorns also. Out of all the quilts I have only 1 is not made by my family. Good going on finding a cheaper one

Thanks Lisa... Today I made a big pot of vegetable soup...my 'fridge runneth over! I forgot to mention there was 2 small containers of those huge black raspberries and a container of strawberries...yummmmm!! Also 3 boxes of margarine.

The cookout was fun, we had a good time. Met some new people. Now I gotta hit the shower and get to bed...church in the morning. Thanks again for commenting.
