We had a murder last night in our county. Here's what happened.
WHEELERSBURG — Scioto County Sheriff Marty V. Donini said one man is dead following a shooting that occurred Thursday night on Old Gallia Pike in Wheelersburg. According to information released Friday morning, a 911 call was received at 10:21 p.m., “the caller stated that his son had been involved in a shooting at this location,” Donini said. When deputies and detectives responded to the call, he said, they found Steve Holsinger, age 33, of 9550 Old Gallia Pike, Wheelersburg, lying deceased in the yard.
Donini said Holsinger died from a gunshot wound. The shooter has been identified as Tyler Staker, age 22, of Portsmouth. Donini stated during this investigation his detectives learned that Staker and his father had responded to the location of the shooting to repossess a piece of equipment that was purchased from their business that was not paid in full. According to Donini, detectives determined that Staker and his father had been at the location for more than an hour knocking on the door in attempts to retrieve the equipment.
Donini said that Holsinger came out onto the porch at approximately 10:20 p.m. with a gun in his hand and very upset. A witness told detectives that he did put the gun into his pocket for a short time, then got upset and pulled out the gun telling Staker and his father that they had three seconds to get off his property, then Holsinger raised the weapon pointing it at the younger Staker’s face.
At this time is when Tyler reportedly shot the deceased several times, Donini said. Holsinger’s body was sent to the Montgomery County Morgue for an autopsy, and evidence is being sent to BCI&I in London, Ohio.
The Portsmouth Daily Times
It's still being investigated. I'm not sure if Staker had a gun permit or not. If he did, then I can't really blame him for using his gun on the guy if the other guy (Holsinger) aimed his gun at his face.
I think both sides could have handled it better, such as the Stakers having a deputy with them when they arrived around 9:15-9:20pm last night. Holsinger should have paid the full price for the lawnmower. Instead, Holsinger told the Stakers that he would drop the lawnmower back off to them that afternoon. He instead was a no show.
The fact that Holsinger wouldn't answer the door (I'm sure he knew who was at his door) proves that he knew he was in the wrong. The fact that Holsinger brandished his gun at them after he went outside before sticking it back in his pockets, only to get agitated once again and go for his gun, this time aiming it at the younger staker's face.
It's sad to see something like this, especially when one of the victims leaves behind a family. But I do believe after what I have read and heard so far is that this didn't have to happen if Holsinger didn't do what he did.
As I stated, the investigation is still going on. I think the key is whether or not Staker has a gun permit to carry one.
