Oh great, the food police are at it again. These liberals need to live their lives, and stay out of everyone elses!

Sugar is so harmful to public health it should be controlled like alcohol and cigarettes, US scientists claimed.

Researchers from the University of California-San Francisco said Wednesday that the public's excessive consumption of sugar not only is contributing to a global obesity pandemic but also is critically altering people's hormones, metabolism and blood pressure and causing "significant damage to the liver."

In an article entitled "The Toxic Truth About Sugar," published in the journal Nature, the scientists said that sugar consumption tripled worldwide over the past 50 years and now is contributing to 35 million deaths a year.

"As long as the public thinks that sugar is just 'empty calories,' we have no chance in solving this," Dr. Robert Lustig said. "There are good calories and bad calories, just as there are good fats and bad fats, good amino acids and bad amino acids, good carbohydrates and bad carbohydrates. But sugar is toxic beyond its calories."

The researchers said that the effects of consuming an excess of sugary foods and drinks mimic the effects of drinking too much alcohol -- which, they pointed out, is made from distilling sugar.

They recommended using taxation, controlling access to sugary products and tightening licensing requirements to sell sweet snacks and drinks in schools and workplaces.

Dr. Laura Schmidt, who was involved in the research, said, "We're not talking prohibition. We're not advocating a major imposition of the government into people's lives."

She added, "We're talking about gentle ways to make sugar consumption slightly less convenient, thereby moving people away from the concentrated dose. What we want is to actually increase people's choices by making foods that aren't loaded with sugar comparatively easier and cheaper to get."

JMHO, the whole Health Issue is just a ruse. Liberals don't care about the health of others.
It's just a way to Tax, Tax, and more Tax on common products. Anytime 'they' can take
the money out of Peters pocket, skim their share off the top, and pay Paul to keep voting
them into office, there will be a law or regulation for 'the betterment of society'.

According to these fools, living is dangerous. So, if that is the case, I'm just going to enjoy my life my way.

In my opinion, they, being the government, is trying to take away our right to make our own decisons. I know how to think for myself. I refuse to be a part of the "cattle" mentality that I feel that they are trying to force on us. But what do I know? Apparently, I can't even think for myself!

Um...its not a liberal thing, its not a conservative thing, its a self-control and personal responsibility thing. More Americans keep their appetites in check, we wouldn't need the long arm of the gov't to regulate things, imo.

Also, I figure as soon as the conservatives can stop trying to tell me what to do with my reproductive rights and Internet I pay $50/mo for, the liberals can keep their grubby little mitts out and off the sugar jar as it were.

It may sound like another political stunt at first but, if you take a trip down grocery lane in any food store and read the labels on the can products, you'll see that sugar in one form or another, is part of the ingredients that helps make the 'product' more palatable- causing people to OD on 'sugar' for years!

Food processors do what ever it takes to make their 'product' appetizing so people will continue to buy it! Much as I can't stand letting politicians get in the way of our lives, someone have to keep these food processors in check!

I looked up Dr Robert Lustig and he has some impressive credentials. He is well known and respected and his crusade appears to be in fighting child obesity: He is Professor of Clinical Pediatrics, in the Division of Endocrinology Director of the Weight Assessment for Teen and Child Health (WATCH) Program at UCSF

But what I want to say/ask is where the fuck do some off you get off in saying he is a liberal? How the hell do you know what his political views are? Slapping labels inappropriately on people is a pretty chicken shit practice IMO

Anyone who wants to control what someone else eats sounds like a liberal to me, to where they want big government in the lives of people who they don't think can take care of themselves. I look around and I don't see anyone else doing this kind of stuff but liberals themselves.

Ummmm, you're getting a little off topic here to where this blog is about what people eat in their personal lives, not about taking a life of an innocent baby which is murder. There's a difference!

Thanks to everyone who's commented.

University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine is where the three authors of "The toxic truth about sugar" are from. They keep calling it, poison.

Sure, it's a little to the 'right' of Berkley....but

"-- Support our local, state and federal officials in placing a substantial tax on products that are loaded with sugar. " ( Laura Schmidt )

Seems like a Liberal to me.

They're related, although in different areas. The point of it being the gov't poking their noses in people's lives unwarranted.

You're kidding me, right? Well, I'm going to go- I've never been good with political discussion. Too visceral.

Ok...just to be "fair":

The war on drugs, drugs are "bad" for us too. And who started the war on drugs? Nancy Regan.

So there, now we have "liberals" telling us how to eat and conservatives telling us we can't party.

Know what I have to say that?

Both sides can get the hell out of my house and let me live my life my way, as long as I'm not harming anyone else or interfering in their life. How's that?

It's ridiculous to blame either side for this "telling us how to live our lives" when both sides are equally guilty in one way or another.

1.Heroin - popular street names include smack, skag, and junk.
2.Cocaine - often referred to as snow, flake, coke, and blow.
3.Barbiturates - popular slang names include yellow jackets, reds, blues, Amy's, and rainbows.
4.Street Methadone
5.Ketamine - a powerful hallucinogen, often referred to as Special K.

With these kind of drugs that are out there, I'm glad she did.

But to try to ban or regulate sugar, that's ridiculous.
