Some sites, like Google or Wikipedia, are "blacked out" in protest of SOPA and PIPA. For those who do not know what these are, here's a link describing them:

SOPA and PIPA

While I'll agree that online piracy is a bad thing, do we REALLY want Congress, the very same people who cannot work together as it is to balance a budget, or, for that matter, even get along, to play "nanny" with what sites are accessible on the net? I sure don't. In my eyes, those in Congress are nothing but a bunch of over sized 8 yrs olds who can't, or don't try to, get along. And for them to think they can legislate what is online is about as funny as Dino, Fred Flinstones pet, operating a computer.

Top 5 reasons Internet opposes these bills

I don't support these bills. Too much room for abuse in them. I support copyrights and the rights of the entertainment industry to protect their works from piracy, don't get me wrong, but, I don't support bills that will make it too easy for sites to be shut down just because it may be suspected. No, I don't have any easy answers for this.

SOPA and PIPA are written badly. Also, the very same companies who developed and promoted file sharing software? Those are the guys now bitching and suing for infringements. Yup... makes ya wonder don't it?

A 15 yr old from the UK now faces extradition to the US for copyright infringement for a thing that is not illegal in the UK. Hmmm..

A single mother is fined 1.5 million dollars for a song download that wasn't even ON her computer.

Who's next? WoW for posting his news stories? Could be.

Knowledge is power. It's not just about copyrights, it's about control. What we read, what we can access, even 'our' news is spoon-fed to the public.

Yeah, I think the two bills go a little too far in combating this problem.

Even if those two weren't in office, some other politician would've tried to pass a bill just like it.

Anyway, SOPA and PIPA are shelved for now, but another bill was rolled out: H.R 1981

Basically:
Each time you use a credit card, each time you read your bank statement, all of your IP information and your search history will be required by your ISP to be stored for 18 months at all times.

This pill is being spun as an anti Child Pornography bill, and its likely most will believe it as such and it'll be passed.

There's also the Megaupload site being shut down. Despite PIPA and SOPA being pushed back, they still want to take someone down with them. Its sad that people who weren't sharing illegal content got swept away as well. I'm scared for Mediafire- a place that I use also, since some sites are already running for the hills in the face of being taken down by the US Gov't.
