A plea for self-spanking.

First, I don't have a long-term perspective on blogs here, although I've been following them for the last month or so, but you would be hard-pressed to follow the blogs for a month and not notice a theme threading through many blogs and the responses to them that concerns "whining" and "complaining." I don't find this particularly surprising; it seems to be ubiquitous wherever online discussion occurs.

I think most of us can probably agree that whenever we see an opinion expressed in a negative fashion and we disagree with it, we're negatively affected. Not only did we just waste time reading an opinion we disagree with, our view of the writer is tainted by the negative expression. I have a hard time stemming this response in myself and I often find myself wanting to respond in a negative manner.

But, having been witness to many flame wars and troll-fests in many different places, I know that responding the way impulse tells me to is not going to be productive for me or anyone else (except perhaps the few people for whom arguing for the sake of arguing is fun.) In fact, responding that way would be counter-productive.

Your attitude is affected by how you express yourself. If you express yourself negatively, you will feel more negative. Despite the fact that online mediums have very low accountability for what transpires, you still have to deal with your conscience, and all this little stuff adds up! At the end of the day, the more positively you've lived your life, the better you feel.

And this is where the plea for self-discipline comes in. Please, think before you hit post. Am I saying this just because I don't like an arbitrary opinion? Do I feel angry, frustrated or annoyed right now? Would I be better off just ignoring this and not responding? Is there any way I could say this in a more positive manner? If the answer to any of these questions is yes, tap that ass and commence to backspacing.

Enjoy the day!

Excellent perspective, but don't expect anyone from FairyLand to comment. Just by your literacy alone you are now a SUSPECTED TROLL.

Very well articulated. I think the crux of the counterpoint is that those of us who have been on here for years have seen this theme echoed for years and many have the "enough already" attitude as, for us, it is rerun conversation.
