While filling up the van at the gas station, I noticed a new sign on the pumps about prepaying. Up until now, there was trust that people would pay for their purchase. Now, gas stations are wanting people to prepay before pumping gas because of the rise of those who fill up and then drive off without paying. From what I've heard, all gas stations are going this route of prepay. I pay at the pump anyway, another sign of the times.

I can remember the day when $10 filled the tank. Today, the gas gauge may move a little bit. Sad isn't it? I can still remember those old gas pumps before it all went digital. Watching the number rolling, and trying to stop right on the number. I loved it when the pumps went all digital..made it so much easier. And for the record, I still say over $3 a gallon is a rip off and there is no excuse for it except for greed.

Another thing I realized, I'm dependent on my cell phone. Yep, I sure am. And the funny thing is...I don't talk on it much. I ran late for work last week, and left my cell phone sitting on the counter at home and didn't realize it until I was at work. Then I spent the day hoping something didn't happen where I would need it. And somewhere along the line, I stopped and wondered to myself just how in the hell did I survive for 30 years without a cell phone to begin with? Which then lead me to thinking that part of why people are so damned stressed out is that they have let the convenience of technology take over and rule their lives. Seriously. How many times have any of you seen people huddled over an IPad, laptop, or their cell phone working? Working when they should be off the clock, or, they're on vacation? I see it all the time at the hotel. Family shows up for a vacation, yet, one or both parents have their cell phone glued to their ear talking business, or, they have the laptop plugged in and "working on something from the office".

Used to be, when one punched out at the end of the day...work was done. Not anymore. I see it all around me all the time. People taking work home with them via their cell phones, pda's, laptops, or IPads. No wonder the world is ready to explode with all those people so stressed they're ready to snap at the smallest thing. We've become so dependent on the conveniences of technology we've forgotten what it's like to just sit back and enjoy the days. Well, I haven't. I still sit out on the back deck with the dogs on nice days and enjoy them. I haven't got an IPad (yet..still want one of those! ), and my cell phone isn't all that fancy..it's an LG through Tracfone. Yeah, it's got a web browser, but, I don't really use it much. My cell phone is more for security than anything else. I just like it's touch screen feature.

Yep, times have changed. Of course, world is always changing. I always wonder what things will be like in another 10 years. We've gone from LP's to 8 tracks to cassettes, and now cd's. Movies have gone from VHS/Beta to DVD and now Blue Ray. Even video games..old Nintendo had the cartridges, now, they're little cd's. TV's are getting "thinner". Even radios are shrinking. Ipods, MP3's, MP4's...etc. Things are shrinking, yet, stress is climbing. Go figure.

Crazy world huh?

I remember when I first got my car gas was about .98 a gallon and it only took about 15 bucks to fill up.... well gone are those days! I also remember saying we'll never see gas below a dollar again... few years later, we'll never see gas under 2 dollars a gallon... well guess what? I read online a couple of days ago that gas would slowly be falling... 2 days later, it's up .05 per. And with this hurricane looming and about to take a direct hit I can only imagine it will be yet another excuse to jack the price up again! Now it takes almost 50 bucks to fill my tank....
It's been pre-pay around here for a long time now. But there are so many drive off's anymore the gas stations have to do it... and if you get caught driving off without paying for gas here in TN, you will lose your license!!
Thankfully I have a job when I clock out, I leave everything about work at work! And as for cell phones, I have a Straight Talk phone... 30 dollar card every month and no contract... I'm good with it.. but will be upgrading my phone soon and getting one with a camera.... mine is just basic phone for now but I'm alright with it!

Used to be, when one punched out at the end of the day...work was done. Not anymore.

I tried to tell that to a psychologist I was dating a few years back! I felt like she was constantly analyzing our relationship- "leave it at work" I said to her! Needless to say, I will never date a psychologist again... weird!!

I always wonder what things will be like in another 10 years.

Dunno about 10 years- maybe 20 years, it'll all be 'virtual reality' only it won't become really popular until people can interact and actually see, feel, hear, smell and taste whatever you're interested in at the moment!

Maybe THEN, I can get laid when I want, with whom I want! Think about it: subscribing to a... 'Fuck of the Month Club'.

Same here in Michigan. They have a sticker on the gas pumps stating that if a driver is caught driving off without paying they will lose their driver's license.

Whenever I get gas nowadays, if the pump does not take plastic, I move on to a station that does. Not only easier, but the security of it. I've seen too many videos, of 'hold-ups gone wrong' where gangster wannabees start shooting. A couple of decades ago, a friend lost a brother in law that chased a 'case of beer' thief outside, to get the license plate number.....only to get shot. That would look like crap on a headstone....'Shot for a twelvepack of Schlitz Malt Liquor'.

Today I had a road trip, went over 240 miles and only $16 in gas.....Great to have a non-hybrid car that'll still get around 50 mpg. Gotta love Craigslist and $700 used Geo Metros. My pick-up gets about 13 mpg, guess what's not been started in over a month?

As for cell phones, when is the last time you saw a man, wearing a watch?

Here they prosecute you under theft laws that cover shoplifting. You can go to jail.

...cd's are a;ready on the move out, but albums are coming back in and then some new form of smallish thing to play in your computer for video and sound...don't remember what it is cslled, but in the makes now....moving on is always a good thing, but sometimes I think it is too fast.

Now, gas stations are wanting people to prepay before pumping gas because of the rise of those who fill up and then drive off without paying. From what I've heard, all gas stations are going this route of prepay.

People have had to prepay for gas at every station around here since the late seventies when gas prices zoomed during the arab oil embargo.

Used to be, when one punched out at the end of the day...work was done. Not anymore. I see it all around me all the time. People taking work home with them via their cell phones, pda's, laptops, or IPads.

That is a good thing actually. I know a lot of people who do that that are salaried employees. If they weren't able to take the work home, they would have to sit in the office until it got done I know a lot of folks who largely home office and only go into work occasionally for meetings.

There is no punching in and out per se for a lot of people. They just schedule office time appointments. In my case, of all the people that I have worked with in the last ten years, I have only met one face to face

stress is climbing. Go figure.

Crazy world huh?

I don't see it that way, at least not for the reasons that you list. Yeah, there is stress due to the economy now. But in bygone days many people had to go into the office to go to work. Now, in many cases, they can do their work from anywhere without a commute or dress code. It is called the virtual office and I think it is great

sadly yes its a sign of the times but luckily at my regular station they actually still provide driveway service, well for everyone else, i'm there most days filling up trucks and the girls know i just do it myself to save them coming out in the cold, i'm more part of the furniture these days, lol
but then its nothing un-usual for them to get a cpl of grand a month out of my fuel purchases

Ya mean, those gas station attendants from Texaco, still pump the gas, check the oil and clean your wind shields? Damn... I wondered where they went to, they moved to Australia... imagine that. They should have retired years ago!
