The Thunder Rolls, and The Lightning Strikes....

Last night when the bad storm started my grand daughter and I were at the grocery store about 15 miles from home.
It was a really strange storm. Just everything about it was different than most storms. I can't really explain it.

Now, for the most part they don't bother me much, but last night I was nervous and trying my best to just get home.... safely. I had very precious cargo with me. And as tough as she likes to act , I know storms kind of scare her sometimes.

We did grab the groceries on our way in, there wasn't that much.... but I gave her the keys and had her run for the house to get inside where it felt a little safer.

I sat there as I was drying off thinking about a friend of mine who is terrified of storms. She's older than me and lost her husband a while back and since then I worry so much about her whenever we get them.
She won't turn on the TV, talk on the phone...even though it's cordless, or run anything electrical while it's storming...or sometimes even if it looks like it's going to.
There are many times she gets so nervous it literally makes her sick.
I feel so bad for her and I've tried to help her get over at least some of it for years... It's just getting worse. (any ideas of help would be greatly appreciated.)

How are you with storms? Do you head for the basement and hide in a corner or stand in the rain watching them?
Are there things you won't do during lightning, or do you just go on as usual?

I go on as usual. Sometimes I will go out on the front porch and watch them. That is what I did earlier today when we had the hail storm.

If your buddy has lived there her entire life and has those problems I doubt that there is much that she can do beyond heavyweight tranquilizers or sleeping pills.

My mother is pretty much the same way with storms although with her hearling loss due to age and her dementia most of the time she has no idea what kind of weather we are having and I am not about to tell her because she would start having panic attacks. I lived with her having those panic attacks growing up and not only did she have an unreasonable fear of storms she expected everyone else to share that fear as well and became angry when they did not.

There is little one can do when someone has an unreasonable fear of something unless they are willing to get psychiatric help for their phobia. At her age I kind of doubt she is willing to face her fear head on. Sometimes all you can do is just let them deal with fear on their own or not.

Thunder won't hurt anyone, however lightning has been known to kill

Depends on the severity of the storm. The typical, everyday thunderstorm, I'll be outside. I like the thunder. Now, one with the ground to sky, continuous lightning strikes, straight line winds, I stay in the house and will close the drapes on the patio window, and that is because my tv is right there.

Last winter when we were hit with the blizzard, I just snuggled up under a blanket and watched it snow and blow all day. And was hoping my power wouldn't get knocked out. Thankfully, it didn't.

I went out today. It was gorgeous, sunny and cloudless. I was on my way to the store. Lo and behold, I discovered a cracked windshield from a hailstone...damn The car also had a few more dents in it than before Oh well, shit happens
