Shall we? Yes, this is in reference to an idiotic comment:

And educated people wonder why menial laborers fail to improve their lot in life.

Let's get this straight...ANYONE can "fail to improve their lot in life". Education has nothing to do with that. If someone fails to improve their lot in life, it is because they did not have the drive to do better.

But, those "menial laborers" that some want to look down on, most are in college and working those jobs while going to school, and, some are working those jobs for a little extra spending cash. These are called "stepping stone" jobs. Not all who start these jobs retire with these jobs. Most either move up in the company they start in, or, get an education and move on. But, let's point out what arrogant s.o.b.'s would NOT have if not for people who do these jobs:

Who here likes a clean room when checking in at a hotel? I'll bet all do. So, if there weren't anyone who would clean them, or, for that matter, clean the dirty linens, there would be no clean hotel rooms. And, with no clean rooms, you all would have to sleep on the ground for those business trips. Doesn't sound at all comfortable.

Let's talk about that nice car sitting in the driveway. If it weren't for "menial" labor, that car wouldn't exist because the shops they are assembled in wouldn't be functional as the dirt and debris would just mount up..making it impossible to work to assemble the car.

How about that nice restaurant people enjoy? Be kind of disgusting to walk in and smell all the trash and dirty dishes that have piled up because no one is cleaning up.

Need I go on? Some want to look down or make fun of those who bust their ass to make things look nice, or to make sure others can work in a less hazardous environment. Before mocking or looking down on those who work hard, stop and think of what you wouldn't have if it weren't for those doing that "menial" labor. Cause without those people, you wouldn't have the stuff you enjoy now.

And, as I said earlier, those "menial" jobs are usually stepping stones into the work world. Not many who start there, retire from those jobs. And if they do, it isn't because they didn't want to improve their lot in life, it could be because they enjoy what they are doing. My job, I've stated why I enjoy it. I get to meet people, talk with them, and I get satisfaction in knowing I helped someone "feel at home" when they are not home. And, I work for a company I know I can move up in. Which is why I've gone back to school to finish the degree I had started when I started working at this company. See....some want to take cheap jabs at others without knowing the facts. And all I've got to say to that is, I'm almost sorry their life is so sad that the only enjoyment they get is trying to make them selves look "better" by making fun of others. Bottom line, those who are happy and secure, don't waste time in making fun of others.

I've never been ashamed of what I do. I know what I'm doing results in families having an enjoyable vacation, and I get satisfaction in knowing I helped in that. And I love the letters kids leave saying how wonderful of a time they had. Sometimes that "thank you" from the kids is far more enriching than any tip left in the room. So yeah, you want to make fun of my job, go for it. I'm proud of what I do, and, I also know, once I've finished my course of studies, I can also move up in the company I'm working for.

These are the same people who go into stores and treat the people working there like dirt beneath their feet. I saw a lot of that over 13 years. And when I was a radio operator for the city I saw how people looked at the sanitation workers.

If the only way someone can build themselves up is by making someone else look small then the problem is theirs. Sometimes there are just not better jobs available in an area. I know here there were people with degrees working fast food because they were about the only ones hiring at the moment. Everyone else was downsizing the work force.

those "menial" jobs are usually stepping stones into the work world.

That was very much true when I was young. Your first several jobs were almost guaranteed to be menial. I consider anything paying less than ten bucks an hour to be menial.

Some people over 50 have been victims of layoffs over the past ten years. Many had gotten put out to pasture by their career fields. They could not get hired in their field, so they had to take a menial job like being a rent-a-cop.

Around here, with a lot of menial jobs times have changed. If you don't speak Spanish, forget it. That is because you would be unable to communicate with coworkers or, in some cases like retail, customers.

Another factor is that employers know that an immigrant will stay on the menial job where as a more skilled American looking for a job would move on as soon as possible.

I'm sorry I just deleted the comment by request off my blog. I agree Sugar without ones to do the dirty work of the more fortunate you would never see snooty people with their noses in the air. I know those are not your words but they are mine. I don't envy ones who have it better. I just don't like them if they carry an attitude like I'm beneath them. I've said this a thousand times in fact I told this to an arrogant lady a couple of days ago.
With your nose stuck in the air like that I hope it starts pouring down rain so you will stifle or drown !!!!
I opened a door for her & she said nothing just gave me a dirty look.

No one has the right to belittle anyone for whatever job they do... at least they are working!!!!!!!! And for those who think they can treat people like shit because of their job they can kiss ass!

Good blog Sugar!

I have had "menial" jobs and not so "menial" jobs, but even the ones that were not so menial were still somewhat menial. I don't consider how much you get paid to define menial. Many bricklayers, roofers, sasnitation workers are paid way above the minimum wage and/or the $10'hour Bruce spoke of that defined his standard of "menial".
Everyone that works has reasons of their own why they take a particular job. I respect that and their decision, as long as they try to be the best they can be while working that position. I don't treat anyone as if they are menial compared to what I do or what anyone does. It is all factured into to the end result of what we need done so that we can accomplish our goals.

...oh yeah....if anyones ego helps them believe that their job isn't menial just because they get paid a bit better than most menial jobs, well...they are fooling themselves. You are menial to someone...the one that pays you to do your job so they don't have to.

Thank you Whapper for your comment.

I totally agree with this. Thank you RJ.

They could not get hired in their field, so they had to take a menial job like being a rent-a-cop.

That is sad, but it's true.

With your nose stuck in the air like that I hope it starts pouring down rain so you will stifle or drown !!!!

Flavor, I love that one! There has been those types of guest at the hotel where I will smile and say "hi" to them, and they have their nose so far up in the air it's a wonder they don't pass out from lack of oxygen. I always think to myself, "If you smile more you might actually know what it means to be happy".

And for those who think they can treat people like shit because of their job they can kiss ass!

Honest work, is...well.....HONEST. At the end of the day, Menial Laborers
might be worn out, but they can look into the mirror and not see a crook.
(by and large, as I hate to use a large paintbrush).

I couldn't agree more. We take for granted that people in "menial" jobs do these things for us. It's hard, physically demanding work and necessary work, and anyone who has no appreciation for those who do it is just a jerk.

And consider for a moment some of the more elite, educated, highly paid people in America. Every one of the CEOs of the Wall Street firms that went bust in 2008 and brought down the economy made at least 8 figure salaries. Every one of them overinvested in crappy CMOs and credit default swaps and thereby bought into a bubble that certainly they should have known could break. Personally, I think the people who cleaned the toilets that those exalted CEOs pissed and shit in added more value to the world than the CEOs did.

We need to get real about some of this. Not everyone is going to go to college. Not everyone should go. If everyone did go, we'd still need someone to wait tables, work on assembly lines, and clean up after us. Anyone who is willing to go to work every day and perform a necessary job is worthy of our respect. I'd add that they also deserve to make enough to have a roof over their head, food on the table, and to see a doctor when they're sick.

Hey I was out of town on a job in Rockport , Tx & while heating up a microwave dinner I looked in there & saw a fucking roach standing on his hind legs dancing with my TV dinner as it was spinning around. I came unglued & made the hotel management move me to a very clean room at 3 in the morning.

Just a quick, dumb note......look at the price of gas when you get it,
and find out who Goldman Sukes make their profit when they 'speculate'
Oil Futures. I will give you a hint, at least 14 of their 'former' executives
are in the Osama administration.
I've heard, that in Libya, Venezuela, and most dictator controlled oil
countries, most 'gas' goes for less than 20c per gallon

I remember a campaign speech, "Under my Programs, Energy prices will
necessarily, go up.".............or something like that.

DWM, my comment wasn't political or partisan. I mentioned Wall Street CEOs to point out that highly educated people often don't deserve our respect.

But when, for no apparent reason, you turn it into an opportunity to turn my comment into a springboard to air your anti-Obama views, my choice is to respond in kind (which would be pretty easy) or to respect the original topic of the blog. I'll choose to do the latter.

Whether it was in response to my comment or not, your constant need to spew your political views, no matter what the topic is, gets really old. If someone blogged about breakfast, you'd feel the need to comment that Obama was trying to ban corn flakes.

There isn't anything menial about menial workers..
If it wasn't for them, as someone said, there would be no place, no offices,
no services, not much of anything for all the people who THINK they're better
because they wear a tie to work..Which IMHO, is the most worthless men's accessory there is.
Many of them got rich because of the underpaid "menial" did all of the labor and hard work to put them there
Another kudo for a thoughtful blog

Not much for cereal myself, but I buy it for my son. If you go for the generics, it saves a shitload of money.
