My only assumption was that it would be impressive.
Stereotyping or stereotypical judgements (racially, anyway) is/are the action of making a judgement about an entire group of people based on actions or characteristics exhibited by only a few of those aforementioned people.
What stereotyping isn't is speaking to one person in a language other than english assuming that they also speak that same language. This action alone is not enough to assume that a person is making a judgement about an entire group of people.
For instance, if I say that ALL OLD WHITE MEN on this website are child molesters, that would be stereotyping.
Conversely, if I try to speak to ONE PERSON in Japanese based on the fact that his/her name is Japanese, this is called "a bad assumption" because I didn't know that SPECIFIC person's inclination. It is not stereotyping because I am not using his/her name origin as an excuse to make a judgement about an ENTIRE GROUP, PEOPLE, etc.
I will say it again: This action alone is not enough to assume that a person is making a judgement about an entire group of people.
Stereotyping=judgement about GROUP
bad judgement=incorrect judgement about PERSON
I know full well that some people of asian origin here in the states do not speak an asian language; I just thought I would try to impress you.
Obviously, I made not only one, but two bad judgements about you. Trust me, I will NEVER try to impress you again. I'm sorry........

All I'll say on this is if you see a person that lives in our country, chances are great they speak english. She may have been a little rough in her last blog countering this topic, but maybe trying to impress her by doing this was not the best choice you made I think. Maybe she gets this all the time, not sure. I think it may show on her blog that she only does english. You sound like a decent guy and I wish ya good luck in your search on here.

Honest mistakes can be rectified and in truth I can only speak a little German, some Russian, a few words of French, Swahili and can understand some Spanish and Italian. I know enough Spanish to order a beer and am fluent in bullshit as a lot of it is spoken at the place I work!
