Many many thousands of moons ago when the winters were very harsh and the only heat for nights was
gathering and sleeping with one another, body against body.
The bears, The wolves,( "trickster" coyotes) coons, lions and foxes, all that lived on this land and in the woods.
One day, fox rared up and said , i shall go find light and heat, it is to bitter cold for us all. others asked where, who,
it has always been this way.
Fox said i know of one, keeper of the fire, puma.
Others shrieked, puma will not give you what is his, fox replied ,i will ask all the same.
Then fox runs off and he travels for days and nights until he finds puma's camp and he sits out side the camp
and thinks and then walks and thinks and walks until he comes up with, if puma will not share, then i will take.
worn out and exhausted fox walks into puma's camp.
Puma stands and shouts who walks into my camp, fox replies, it is i, fox and i have traveled far with out rest and i am in need of
warmth and rest.
Puma says, you are here to steal my fire, fox say,s oh no, only to rest puma.
puma tells fox, OK then you may rest for a couple of hours then you must leave my camp.
fox replies, thank you so much and i promise to leave after my rest.
So fox lays and falls asleep and a few hours later he awakes and slowly opens his eyes to see if puma sleeps and then he waits
as he watches for a few more hours.
Then fox jumps up and runs through the fire and grabs a stick of fire and runs and runs through the woods over hills
has fast as he could, the fire had burned a red streak from his tail to his head and this is how he became, Red-Fox
