I love to fly but decided I'd rather drive from now on- for overseas travel, maybe I'll consider an amphibian/auto to get there!

Scary mishap article and video link [05:15]

Update on the story:

CNN Breaking News

-- FAA suspends air traffic controller who failed to respond to incoming planes at Reagan National Airport.

SUSPEND??? That controller should have been fired on the spot- he put about 180 or so lives in jeopardy!!

I saw this on the news this morning. That is some scary shit!! And, apparently, this isn't the first time Regan International had this problem. Now the Transportation Secretary is telling the FAA that there has to be 2 controllers in the towers for the midnight shifts in ALL the airports.

Imagine what those passengers must be thinking right now to know they were on planes that landed there with no help from the controllers.

Scary for sure !! I heard on the news tonight that the man was on his 4th day of overtime ~ not that that is an excuse ~ but I thought they were no longer working the 60 hour weeks that was part of the problem of the 1981 strike ??

Talk about a stressful job! You couldn't pay me enough to take on this job. I think a lot of air traffic controllers are very over worked...but I definitely don't like the thought of them catching a few zzzz's during one of my flights.

Thank God the pilot was able to somehow wrestle control of the plane back and keep it from nose diving into a pile of twisted burning metal and flesh. Without an air traffic controller the laws of physics simply don't work, without an air traffic controller who knows, maybe the pilots would have flown the plane into somethng like the world trade center, it could have been 9/11 all over again, only air traffic controllers can prevent that.

Please.

Air traffic 'managers' (because that is basically all they do) just help to keep traffic seperated and avoid congestion. Most airports don't have control towers and pilots are perfectly capable of flying and landing a plane without any help from some guy sitting in front of a computer screen miles away
. There is a unicom frequency that pilots can use to talk to each other so they can maintain seperation in the flight pattern and from what I understand this airport at that time of day had little traffic to worry about.
The pilot in command of any flight can basically do whatever he or she wants to do if they so desire, if you are the paranoid type. That means that no traffic controller sitting on the ground can physically effect the flight, which if you are IN the plane is all that really matters.

Just another non-event blown out of proportion by the news business.
