Dog in Japan stays by the side of its ailing friend in the rubble

Yes. He is protecting the dog. That is why he did not want us to approach them. He was trying to keep us at bay.

I think this reporter got it all wrong when the dog was approaching him in this video- I got the distinct impression, that the dog was trying to tell the reporter to follow him back to the dog's friend- to help him!

What do you think??

I think you're right. It looked to me like the dog wanted them to help his/her friend. If that dog was protecting, it would have ran up with teeth bared, not run up as if to get attention then run back to the other dog.

I read further in the article and was glad to see that both dogs did indeed get help from a vet.

Great story. I had a rescue akita once, Adak. He looked like a 120 pound wolf. The akita is a Japanese breed whose mission was to protect the family of Samurai warriors when they were gone. You did not want to come into my yard or house when I was gone. Well, actually, you never do, as the breeds may change but there are always two to three reasons to not do so, all with teeth, strength and a protective attitude.

I had blogged about this years ago. But, (yeah, I'll say it) the black people next door in a rent house had a loser gangster kid who did some people wrong. The opposing gangsters came to get even and made a mistake of trying to scale the fence on the border while I was at work. Adak went after him. He shot Adak through the lip (no real damage), but after that, the Big Dog got down to terms and ripped him up. The perp. struggled down the sidewalk and passed out from blood loss. The cops picked him up.

When I came home I saw the sagging lip and an odd wound, and said WTF? He wasn't hurting or bleeding. He proudly led me to the fence and I saw blood all over it and the trail leading from the house. I took him to the vet and found out that he had a gun shot wound. I called the police inquiring and they filled in the blanks. Adak got a steak dinner that night.

BTW, the loser kid was picked up on other charges and the people later moved out (the rest of the family except for that kid were cool).
