Well hell, with this delivery run i've been making the last few days, my sleep habits have really gone in the toilet. And my mind stays there, so no further comments on that need be made. Anyway, I leave the house about midnight, get to the pick up by 0030 or so, and if I 'm lucky, I’m out of there by 0130. not bad as it usually only takes about an hour and a half of a little elss to get to the delivery, and they get that truck emptied in about 45 minutes, then I’m off and headed home by 0400. Still dark and not much traffic, so it isn't bad.

And just for the sake of taking up space, I’ll give ya a brief run down on the whats' of it. This is for a large pharmaceutical company with a distribution center here, and in the last 6 months or so they have cut back on the late shift, which is the one that packs the orders and loads my truck. If all goes well, once I get there, things are moving pretty quick. The problem is they only have one person that takes care of most of what I have to pick up. The guy is good tho, he runs his ass off trying to keep up with not just one line, but sometimes 3 or 4. The totes that the orders are put in come down a conveyer line, all automated and each one is directed to where it needs to get off the main line and on the right spur. This guy has a scanner on his arm and reads the bar code, then stacks the totes on pallets. Easy right? It may be for him, but if you saw how hectic it gets in there at times, you would probably wonder how they do it.

Anyway, once my truck is loaded, I have all the paper work signed, initialed, and ready to go, and that can take a while, 'cause anything controlled has to have a chain of custody record. So I have about 50 to 75 individual sheets with from 1 to 25 entries I have to initial and sign. Once all that is done, I head out, about an hour and a half and I'm there, they unload the truck and sort that mess so it is given to the right courier driver for delivery. I never touch a bit of it. About 45 minutes and I'm headed home.

I get back to the Cape and park the truck, and now I also have some paper work that needs to go to the company i'm driving for and some that the pharmaceutical company needs. Guess what, NO ONE home to give it to. Right after I pull out, the parking lot is almost empty. And no one coming in till about an hour, maybe two, after I get back. So, drop part of the paper work in a mail slot, then turn the company stuff in when I get back the next night. Now that I have been doing this a few days, i'm learning what has to go where and how to get it there. Seems everyone thought I was psychic or something and just knew what to do. No, I am not psychic, a bit psychotic maybe, but not psychic. But much thanks to the guy on night dispatch. He has really been a big help in getting me trained, lol. Even it it is over the phone.

So, two more nights, and maybe some next week. Will find out tomorrow if i'm going to be doing it any more for a while. Now if I could feasibly get back over the road, I would be a happy clam.

When you do the math, calculate your hours and factor against your check, what does this gig actually pay you per hour? Whose vehicle is it and who pays for the fuel?

this is a company job, their truck, their fuel, and they do the tax part. and i hate doing taxes. this year is going to be fun, cause that courier run i had was contract, and with all the repairs to my pick up, and fuel expenses, it almost wound up costing me. so maybe i won't have as big a chunk coming out or my pocket as i'm th9inking i will, but gotta get the pay info before i can even start to figure it out.

I am glad it isn't like a courier job, those suck and are rip offs for reasons that you explain.

I bet it's nice though, to get out of the house and do just about anything. I know I live for the moments when I can leave.

It sounds to me that this is just what you needed! I hope you get more and it pays enough to get your wood shop set up just the way you want it.
