Memories of Nana

In dreams and wonderings you will always be here
My beloved nana with the curly gray hair
I miss you now you are gone from this earthly place
I will never forget your wonderful, loving face
Or times as a child many years ago
On Sunday, for lunch to your house we would go
Remembrances of a child, such as me
They were times I looked forward to with glee

Your old worn sofa, draped in its’ red and gray shroud
The radiogram in the corner, blaring out loud
Lace curtains, fluttering in the breeze
Sounds from outside, of buzzing bumblebees
The red Formica table, with the silver metal trim
Saucers of half melted butter, dripping at the rim
You always had those large slices of brown bread
At the time, it was a taste us kids would dread

I remember your kitchen as an intriguing place
To a kid with a dirt smeared face
Your green enamel stove, with the white polka dots
The kitchen bench, with its’ well worn spots
Your three tier biscuit tin
All of its’ goodies contained within
With your Andrews health salts, overhead on the shelves
Threatened with a dose, if we didnt remember ourselves

Tiger lilies, bright orange in full bloom
In a yard where I played with so much room
Running wild, imagining a world of my own
A safe place where there was no need to frown
You had a never-ending supply of old fruit tins
And paintbrushes, enough for all the grandchildren
Filled with water, we “painted” outside on your house
Your way of keeping us, “quiet as a mouse”

Loving hugs that you gave would crush any bear
Leaving no doubt you had plenty to spare
You smelled of lilacs and lemon soap
And the advice you gave, was always full of hope
Your skin was so wrinkled, how soft it felt
I thought you needed ironing to flatten it out
You always wore your “pinnie”, and your hair in a net
These things nana, are the things I will never forget
