Ok, so yall all remember that i used to work in mental health, and it almost drove me crazy (there i go, cracking myself the fuck up again).
then i got my new job, which is the greatest job ive ever had, most of the people we see are at the most 2 appts...for those of you that dont hang on every word regarding my life...im working for an oral surgeon...so the peeps come, he removes wisdom teeth or whatever, they leave and we never see them again.
Until now....this poor lady, age 64 years, and every tooth she has is broken off at the gum line...i wish i had a scanner and i would scan in her xray...fuck hippa....
but that isnt the worse part...on her lower teeth (for anyone that knows about tooth numbers is was #31 or 30) the bottom left wisdom tooth is #32, so count over, anyway, this tooth has so much decay that it has eaten through her jaw bone...and as she was talking to me, a steady stream of yellow pus was draining out of an opening in her chin...yes this ladys tooth was so infected that it broke through her chin and was draining...
I asked my doctor why wasnt she screaming in pain, and he said he didnt know, that prob her teeth had hurt for so long, she didnt know any better.
so i said...so she's just tough"?
he said yes, that was so...
so i said...i guess when you are very very poor, you have no choice but to be tough, trying to remind him that many people live "paycheck to paycheck" and she was broke...but he plans to give her a great break on the prices...
oh, and for anyone that doesnt know...Medicare pays NOTHING on teeth...

I see things like this and I'm so glad we have a clinic in my area. We have a medical clinic that for a small fee you can get yearly physicals, and if you need things like blood work or x rays done, they do so on a "slide scale", meaning, if your office visit is $30 or less...then you're covered, if your office visit is over that..then the blood work, x rays, etc will cost. I don't know the cost. And we also have a dental clinic where again, it's pretty much the same thing, small office visit pay and most everything is covered. Again, x rays and such are on a slide scale too. Of course, these are on a not so safe side of town..but hey, it's there.
