Beautiful weather here in KY...a rarity....usually to hot or to cold, but today great weather.

So a friend (lady) and i decide to take a walk at a local park.

remember I live in a small town, we met 3 other people....signs everywhere posting that all dogs must be on leash...ok, jake was on a leash, he just didnt have a human attached to the other end...and it as a paved walking trail, stated to be 1.1 mile, but it''s the longest 1.1 mile i have ever walked...drifting...

my friend had her dog, a 18 month or so non altered male...he pulled, he jumped...he did every thing that i find unacceptable in a dog...

so we are strolling along, and i dont know exactly where the jakester is, but i can hear his ID tags jiggle in the back ground...she keeps turning a looking and calling him...i would wait until i could no longer hear his jingle, and i would sofly call...Jay Bird...Jay Bird, come up beside me...moments later i would hear him running to come to me..

finally I asked her to stop turning around looking for him, as it was his job to keep up with me....not my job to keep up with him....the entire area was surrounded by a fence, and like i said, we were the only people there...2 cars in the parking lot..and I knew where those people were., so he was in no danger of getting lost, or out into traffic, or dognapped..

do you agree?

also note, her dog will jump up and eat food off the table if not guarded, doesnt know how to greet visitors...jumps barks, scratches.....

lol...but i did threaten to give jake a whipping this afternoon...lol..he laughted out loud too, he has never been struck by me, and certainly not by anyone else....that would live to tell about it...that little Jake...he is the sweetest little dog.

after our walk, he had baby asprin, and has napped all afternoon..

anywhooo....do you accept bad behavior from your dog?

.do you accept bad behavior from your dog?

I've got 5 dogs here...and bad behavior is unacceptable. Believe me...they try...and there has been scoldings. And when they're being really stubborn.....I take a rolled up magazine and slap it on the table to get their attention. They do get a smack on the nose if I catch them trying to snitch food off my plate.

For having 5 dogs here....they do behave fairly well.

Were you accused of neglect?

Jake was on a leash ... good for you!! But... I think there IS supposed to be a human at the other end comet!! *snickering* But.. Jake is probably a good dog and does listen to you and doesn't wander off too far....

This comment cracked me up!!!

finally I asked her to stop turning around looking for him, as it was his job to keep up with me....not my job to keep up with him

If it was only that easy!!

You're so funny comet!!! ...

but there was no where for him to wander off to...we were on a paved trail, thur a woods, we had some rain last nite, so the woods was wet, and little jake dont like to get his feet wet....and the entire 37 acres is fenced...

i taught Jake something i saw on TV...it was convicts training dogs...the convict said to the dog...come up!...and the dog came and sat on his foot....I taught jaker the same thing... so,thats all that is required.."come up" and like most good dogs Jake has a very strong desire to please me...dont tell him, but i have the same desire...ok now im BWI

Sugar...........you are a true champion!!!!!!!

Awwww shucks!!!! Thanks!

I remember I used to "walk" King by putting a leash on him, and once out in the fields...I took it off him and let him "wander"...he never went far. He was always in calling distance and would come up to me when called.

No, nobody like an obnoxious pet. They must learn manners early on.

i did threaten to give jake a whipping this afternoon.o....do you accept bad behavior from your dog

I got up from dining in my living room to get some water. Manfred, at the age of about 18 months, had the nerve to steal a steak off of my plate. I beat his ass and threw him, literally, outside (no abuse) in an exhibition of dominance and submission (get the dog off of the ground) to demonstrate who the big dog in the house is. There usually will be an alpha challenge by their nature. No problems since.

Since then, no problems around here. They know daddy is a kind, gentle man, but don't piss him off. The lines are clear.

Good blog, Comet. Just thought I'd pass this trick along to you, it works first time every time when done properly, and be used on any dog, yours or a friends, without any fear of upseting anyone:

Simply wait for the dog to attempt doing a "bad" thing, like snitching a bite of food off a plate. As he makes his move toward the plate, simply grab him by the muzzle, squeeze firmly pushing his nose down toward the floor, lock eyes with him, and say VERY sternly NO!!!. squeeze his muzzle a little tighter and then release.

This works on any size dog. There are no "bad" dogs, just dogs that haven't been told what their boundaries are.
Good job on Jake, by the way.

i do love animals, and tho we have none here now, in the past it seems one way or another the family had dogs and cats, and a few other critters over the years. my last dog was a rottie that i acquired while living in north idaho. and raised from about 12 weeks old. she got house broke by rubbing her nose in it then being put outside. eventually all i had to do was ask "do you need to potty?". then she got to where she would come up and either stare at me or put her head in my lap or just go to the door. she never was a barker, and i taught her not to jump up on people. she would how ever lean against your legs and if you weren't expecting it, just about knock ya down that way. then came the tongue. i nick named her the 100 pound tongue. never did break her of licking someone to death, or trying to anyway. but, she was a very good pooch. loved everyone and everything, wouldn't hurt another animal intentionally, and loved to play with cats. oh, and she was a house pet too. i don't think she spent a night outside the house unless it was with me some where.

They cackled..with laughter..., as we passed....blackie stuck his nose...right where I would put mine..if it was OK..with her!!!! Yep....right in the "Y" it went!!!! I told him No...and pulled him away....and I told them...yeah...he has a Big ole Nose!!! Those ladies where almost in tears with Laughter!!! Too funny!!!
I'll pop him on the snout if he is gonna do something that will get himself hurt!

i wish i could take credit for Jake's goodness....but he has never been bad. I got him when he was 6 months old (from a bad place where he had to compete with rotties for food) i then spend the weekend taking him to see everyone I know, begging please take this little dog....lol...talk about the joke being on me...by sunday morning, I was in forever love...

for the first few weeks he was either in my lap, or on a leash very near me, or in his pet taxi. (which he loves to this day). I had a small group of christmas bells, the type you hang up at Christmas....well fuck...Christmas bells...(sometimes i crack myself the fuck up) i hung them on the doorknob, and each time I would take him out, i would jingle the bells and praise him...he "got it" the second time...he would wake up, take that long ole nose, jingle the bells and out we would go...

as to how he knew what was his toys and ok to tear up vs my new shoes...i dont know, i did a lot of research, and to this day always try to display confindence so he knows im in charge, and im taking care of everything...for example, i always eat first, I always go pee first, i alway go in the door first, and it's not my job to keep up with him, but his to keep up with me, i am the one that decides when we will play ball or not, except his trick of scooting the ball under the couch, so i have to lift it and he runs in and grab it like it is the greatest game.....little bastard...ok so what do i know, i guess he is in charge...
