What two would have been the best all-time battery combination in all of baseball? For those of you aren't familiar with the term battery in baseball, this is the pitcher and catcher.

The two that I think would have been a totally awesome battery combination you ask? This would be Nolan Ryan, who played for the California Angels starting out, and then went on to play for the Houston Astros from 1980-1988 (I liked him best with this team), and then went on to finish his career with the Texas Rangers in 1993.

Johnny Bench would be the other half of this awesome battery combination. To me, he was the best of the best among catchers. He played for the Cincinnati Reds his entire career from 1967-1983. He retired young at the age of 36.

Imagine what it would have been like to have Nolan Ryan playing with the Reds during the Big Red Machine era with Johnny Bench!

Congrats, Bruce, on your team's victory just now. I honestly didn't think you guys would have made it past the first round of playoffs. I still think the New York Yankees are going to the World Series. Hopefully They'll play the San Francisco Giants. I hare Philly, especially after what they did to my Reds.

Randy Johnson/Johnny Bench would be interesting.

Do you think Bench could handle a Gaylord Perry spitball??

Thank you. It is hard to believe after so many years of futility.

I just saw your blog and didn't read it so I made it harder on myself. I took battery to mean a pitcher and catcher that they played together on the same team. So from that point of view, there were some good batteries but tonight I will be a homer and go with Nolan Ryan and Ivan "Pudge" Rodriguez. But within your asking for the best pitcher and catcher, whether they played together or not, I agree with your choices.

I hare Philly
Opps, that should read "I hate Philly".

Yeah, Bruce, you're right about what battery combination would mean, but that's why I phrased it as I did starting the blog out. If I menat it the way you were first thinking, I would have said were/is and not would have been.

I agree with your choices.
Thanks!

Nah, you're probably thinking of Pete Rose.

I agree with the Nolan Ryan choice...he was a pitcher to be respected.

But...I'm loyal to my Tigers, and my favorite all time catcher with the Tigers has always been Lance Parrish.
