To me, it refers to a man who is unafraid to show his "feminine" side, i.e. in fashon, music, publicly hugging another man as opposed to shaking hands (a la Craig Ferguson), etc. At least that's MY understanding...!! (A memorable episode of "South Park" played on this trend a few years ago, complete with Kenny changing his jacket from orange to a stylish printed one...!!!)

Men who dress up, sweater vests, use hair products like gels and mousse, hair spray. Like to shop for clothes....basically a man not afraid to show his feminine side. And they are heterosexual.
And I didn't look this up either.

I just gave it some thought..... My Non-Politically Correct side thinks...METROSEXUAL... A Hetrosexual man that enjoys the lifestyle and 'Yuppiness' of a gay male. You know....sharp dresser, literate, good communicator, polite, good manners, knows the right wine for the right food/occasion, intelligent...
Then I realize what a large paintbrush that is......as Barney Frank is a gay male. And....he really blows that old sterotype out of the water.

The definition from Wikipedia: Metrosexual is a neologism portmanteau of metropolitan and heterosexual coined in 1994 describing a man (especially one living in a post-industrial, capitalist culture) who displays attributes stereotypically associated with homosexual men (such as a strong concern for his appearance), although he is not homosexual.
I would extend this a bit too include interests that women like that most hetero males don't such as craft faires and museums on the weekend in lieu of of watching sports, enjoying what could be termed "chick flicks" instead of action movies, preferring seeing a Cher concert over the Stones. You see a lot of the metrosexual image in commercials. An example for you older folks would be the character Felix Unger in the old move (Jack Lemmon) and TV series (Tony Randle), the Odd Couple.
Yes, I have met them, and even if they were, indeed, straight, I wondered if they were a closet dweller, gay or bi.

I think the word is ridiculous and used by ignorant people most of the time. People have their own style even if it's the lack there of and it doesn't matter what that is. When we put labels on people we dehumanize them making it easier to make fun of or belittle. I happen to be one of those well dressed men but make no mistake that I am all man. I hunt, fish, work hard, and even used to fight a little. Nothing wrong with looking nice and if you don't believe me ask zz top.
