I'm Excited!!! posted 8/24/2010 9:15:06 PM | 0 kudos what's this?     report abuse   onehornytoad69 I'm so Excited...All I want to do is run around and Scream..."Hell Yeah"!!!(I have been! ) Poor ole Blackie is fed up with all that I think... Since I can't get a DAMN J-O-B...I'm gonna start my Own Frigging Business!!! I have been doing some Jobs...(I'm a Handyman!! ) for the past couple of years!!! I have Customers that Call me back..So that's Cool!! May God Blessem!!! Tomorrow, Lord willing I will talk with someone who will help me out!!! (The Small Business Admn.!) I Hope they will at least "Point" me in the right Direction!!! I need to advertise.... but I was waiting till my Skills were up to Par...!! I know I will be learning till I die...But I do believe I can do most anything as good as anyone out there!!! I Strive to please my customers...till they are over satisfied! The Biggest problem I Face is Charging PPL the Correct amount!! I have a Big heart..and I really would do the work for FREE if I could!! So I have to be Painfully honest to myself and Charge at least..what is needed!!! Thoughts and Prayers are soooo Welcome!!! Plz!! I Really want this to WORK!!! 	Good for you Alex!! That sounds like a good idea!! A friend and I have been talking about going into some sort of business together. We're going shopping for some things tomorrow!! Try posting an ad on Craigslist and see if you get any work that way. Someone is always needing a handyman! lord knows, I could use one right now too!! lol Good luck on your venture!! I'm sure you'll do great!!

I don't see a lot of things in black and white...but business is one area that I do. Sure it was hard in the beginning...but I just started looking at each of my jobs as...this job is the phone bill...and this job is the electric bill...and this job is my house payment...and so on. It was a piece of cake after that. Occasionally...I will get a potential customer who tries to talk me into lowering my prices. When this happens...I stand firm...and direct them to Michael’s Craft Store and tell them they can certainly do the art project them self if they really want to. Most of them decide to go with me...but a couple have decided to go the Michael’s route...which is fine with me because they seemed like difficult customers anyway. Good luck with your new business.

	Congrats on your decision to start your own business! It takes work but is also fun making your own decisions! What ever name you come up with, register it with your state to protect the name! You can use your S.S. # as a tax ID. Open up a checking account under a DBA (Doing Business As). I paid all my bills out of it and the rest was mine well... until tax time! I opened mine 10 years ago- it's a shell now thanks to the economy but I still have it for the occasional service call! I'm just going to open another one! The Biggest problem I Face is Charging PPL the Correct amount!! Call around to other people that are handymen (check newspaper ads) and ask what they charge for doing jobs (they don't have to know what you're doing) or maybe call people that have established businesses doing that- same thing, they needn't know what you're up to! 	it ain't easy being green my friend. I've been battling along building up my own business for the last 23 yrs and finally started to get on my feet just to have the government change all their rules and regulations effectively freezing me out of a timber supply from state owned land. so now we are going to try branching off with our own excavator hire with the equipment we already have doing clean-up maintenance on farms etc but are in the same dilemma working out the right rates to charge but we're sneakily ringing around the limited local opposition to see what their rates are... and ring similar business's on the other side of the state or even in a neighbouring state and explain you want to try setting up a business of your own, when they realise your no threat to their business in their area you'll be surprised how helpful they will be. apart from that , play it by ear

	The Small Business Admn.! They will be a lot of help especially in areas getting licenses, insurance, getting bonded, tax filings, etc. It is all more complicated, time consuming and costly than people realize.

	I ran my own beauty shop for 20 yrs. My biggest regret? BEING TOO SOFT HEARTED!!! I never did get the hang of charging what I should have. Did far too many freebies. Allowed people to intimidate me into extra services for same amount of money. And so on and so on and so on. My advice is before you start anything, reinforce your BACKBONE...make it strong and sturdy and educate it that you're making a LIVING....not just doodling around. Lose a customer? So what? Goes with the territory. It took me years to learn I didn't have to kiss peoples ass to keep them. Every time I lost one I ended up gaining 2 new ones. Be strong hun....persistant and focused. 	Hope the Small Business Admin can give you as much good advice as you got here...for FREE! lol Good luck with this venture. And don't be afraid to charge what you should. And have your customers review you on "Angie's List" or the Better Business Bureau. Also word of mouth helps a lot!
