Most families have them, so that got me wondering about what people on this site have as family heirlooms that were passed down to them from generations to generations in their families.

I really haven't taken any real interest in this with my own family, but I'm going to be checking into this to see what family heirloom(s) we may have in my family.

Do you know of any family heirloom(s) your family has or may have?

family heirlooms that were passed down to them from generations to generations in their families.

I started thinking and neither side of my family ever had any that I recall.

I have a teapot that belonged to my great grandparents who lived in Ireland. And yes I still use it to serve hot tea and have hand carried it every time I moved. I have some pearls that belonged to my grandmother that wil be handed down to the next generation.

The thing about family heirloom is that when it i time for them to be passed down, who gets them? I know that has caused some arguments in families.

That is best clarified in advance by the soon to be departed.

I have a piecework quilt that was hand made by my great grandmother. It has hundreds of small pieces of cloth sewn together.

My parents have a silverware set passed down by my Mom's mother who had it passed down to her by her mother. Then there is a family Bible passed down to my Dad from his Mother, which has been passed down by, I think Dad said 4 generations.

My mom has a few rings she will pass down to me when the time comes. Other than that...I consider family pictures to be the best family heirloom of all. IMHO...they're priceless.

I never really thought about that as family heirlooms, but you're absolutely right, they are, and they're very priceless as well and can never be replaced. I would have to agree with you on this.

Thanks to all that shared about their family heirlooms, along with others that posted comments on the subject.

My family's heirlooms are a bit more "recent". My mom's side of the family has been traced back to the Revolutionary War. Dad's? No clue!
We have a lot of old pictures. Some are tintypes. I treasure those! And when my Grandma passed, I got a lot of pieces of furniture from her home, and several treasures (glass pictures and dishes, etc). I have her family Bible, which has births and deaths recorded in it (my Great Grandma married at the age of 12! Can you believe that?) I also have her engagement ring and wedding band.
I was very surprised a few months ago. My mom pulled a small jewelry box out of her kitchen cabinet. When she opened it up there was the most beautiful Amethyst in a silver setting. I'd never seen this ring before. Mom told me it was Grandma's. And now I wear it every day! I hope some day I can pass it on to my son's wife or daughter....
I'm lucky that my mom is so into family history preservation. I've inherited that talent (I'm also the only one in my family who can remember dates LOL) and hope to continue the tradition on long into the future!

Some of the responses might depend on where the family has resided. If you get people who reside east of the Mississippi River, there are likely to be more things handed down that go back a long ways.

In the case of my family, my grandparents migrated from the east to California in the twenties. They only brought what they needed. They then bought things and over time these things were replaced by newer things and the older things were thrown out or given away. As for my great grandparents when they passed, they were still in the east and other relatives got the goodies that still resided there.
