I was going to post this as a bulletin, but I figured I'd blog it instead to get it out to more people than just my friends.

This is true and this just happened over the weekend. I heard it has already happened in Arkansas, Louisiana & as of yesterday Florida. I assume, it will keep spreading.

Saturday while out with my friends, one of them recieved a phone call, but happened (luckily) to miss the call. The message was an automated message left on their voicemail that said their Mastercard was suspended, to take care of this matter, PRESS #1.

Thank God my friends aren't gulliable dummies....they obviously couldn't press one because the message was left on their voicemail, instead they got out their only Mastercard and called the customer service number on the back of the card.
It stated they had a positive balance (therefore the card was NOTsuspended).

From there, they opted to speak to a Mastercard representitive and they were told it is a SCAM and that 2 states have been hit, Florida being next on the list as a 3rd. They also said they had the FBI involved in finding whoever is pulling this scam as it is probably from out of the country. She told them if they recieved this message again to simply hang up and to NOT press #1!!!!

Once you press #1, you are forwarded to a live person who is going to ask you to verify your card number, DOB & the 3 numbers on the back of the card.

I hope this is seen by alot of people & I hope no one here has fallen for this scam.
Mastercard stated they would never ask for your full card number over the phone.

Be safe!

Thanks for posting. Just like anything in an email, there are just enough gullible people to believe what comes in without checking out first. My credit card holders don't have my email for just that reason and others.

Look at your credit card statements each month! One suspicious action you should look for, is a small amount (usually a few cents- 1¢ to maybe 7¢ to 9¢ or so) of money that shows up on your statement!

Unless you authorized someone to establish a link between your bank account and a company's account (like a brokerage account) to transfer money back and forth (ACH for: Automated Clearing House) electronically- this could be suspicious behavior by someone testing a link between your account and theirs!

I have a 1¢ amount on my credit card (I don't like debit cards)- I called the credit card company and they gave me a company name and phone number! I called, it's disconnected- I did a search on the internet of the company- can't find them! I'm not too concerned, it's a card with a small amount for incidentals and usually half of it is charged up anyway!

So, be careful out there folks!

I should have said that the charge was on my credit card- not on my bank account but the idea is the same- check all credit (debit) card and bank statements!

Thankfully I don't have a credit card. Thanks for putting the warning out. It's been a while since I got one, but I've been getting calls from "card services" stating that they can "lower the interest" on my cards. Like I said, I don't have a credit, I report them on the do not call list.

Thanks! I got a wierd number on my phone today...didn't answer...looked it up and it was a cleaning company in Virginia??? Oh worries...but I don't answer or follow instructions from someone I don't know.

haven't had any calls about my debit card, but i did see some minor charges pop up on mine. contacted all the people involved, which was a pain, finally got my card canceled, and a new one issued. but if you think something is going on contact your bank and ask for the fraud department, tell them and do the same thing. cancel that card immediately. then if need be take almost all of the money out of your account to carry you over till ya get the new card.

with online banking, it's easy enough to check your account a couple times a day, and i usually do. so those charges didn't have a chance of growing. and btw, the bank canceled them.
