I am recalling a recent blog by softie involving a relative with some black lineage named Darkey. That is a terrible name to hang on a kid. Around the same time, somebody posted a blog about a child coming into the world in their family. The poster expressed that the name was so cute. Well, what is cute to one person is peculiar and odd to another.

Anyway, here is a link to an article overviewing laws on naming kids in various countries that I coincidentally ran across today.

Of course there have been discussions on here about naming kids:

It was a year or two ago that a couple, I believe in Pennsylvania, were refused a birthday cake by Wal-Mart because the kid was named Adolf Hitler.

Then there are the names like Moon Unit and Dweezil Zappa.

In Texas, a former governor named his daughter Ima Hogg. Fortunately, she was not obese.

I told about encountering a young lady who just gotten out of the navy and had an unusual name that her parents made up. When she went to Japan on duty she discovered that her name meant something "derogatory" in Japanese.

In high school there were the twins, Forest and Fern Kendall. He didn't mind his. But she hated hers and didn't appreciate being named after a plant. She told some of us once that a flower would have been okay, but not a plant. She went by her middle name, Elaine.

I like unusual names. I was so glad when everyone started calling me by my last name because so many had my first name. Weird names are fine once you get out of high school where everyone teases you just for breathing.

unique names are great, but naming a kid something stupid don't mean its a good name. Bruce wasn't their other names back in the 70's? Oh yeah Elijah Blue? Damn I hate brain farts I know there were more

There were lot of weird names. Sonny and Cher's kid, Chastity. The lead singer for Jefferson Airplane, Grace Slick, named her kid, God.

I realize how some kids even today are still given names that are somewhat peculiar by normal standards. I know that a certain actress named Gwyneth Paltrow named her son Moses...and her daughter Apple.

I don't know how most people feel...but I would hate to be named after a piece of fruit.

Personally, I went to high school with a gal who was named Pepper Minton. She loved her name and she was affectionately referred to as Peppermint. Another friend of mine in grade school had the name Penny Nichols. She played basketball with me and instead of a plain ole' # 6 on her jersey...she had 6 cents. Remembering back...I don't believe she had any problems with her name either...so I guess not every weird or unusual name leaves scars.

I remember in high school where there was a homely looking girl named Ethel. That stood out to me because I usually see older people with that name.

I like unusual names too... I went to school with a girl named Echo Waters. I always thought that was the coolest name. I think I have mentioned her in a blog on a similar subject a while back.

I've never told anyone here that my brother's name is Tom Sawyer..... Really... that's his name!!!

What I was saying is that it was very unusual to see a girl named Ethel in my age group. That name is more common with the elderly when the name Ethel was used more during that time era.

Strange names were common in our family. I had a legal name and then the Celtic name and the Lakota name my grandfathers called me which stuck. ( I always said those two were hippies before it was cool to be one) Lucky for me my father put his foot down and would not let them put ALL those names on my birth certificate. I have used all the names from time to time for various things.

That reminded me...Eddie Van Halen and his then wife, Valerie Bertinelli named their son Wolfgang.

I posted this blog several months ago. It is a database that can search for names by year from the Social Security Administration.
