I was thinking the other day about some of the classic Eagles songs. And then I started thinking about how cool it would be to have another band cover these awesome songs. I then realized this might make for some lively discussion in the Land of the Blogs.

So peeps...If you could remake a song...which one would you choose...and who would you choose to sing it?

Me? I would love to hear Nickelback cover some of the Eagles classics. I think they would do an amazing job with these songs.

How do I say this... this is probably a good idea, but one I don't really relate to. I'm one of those that do not like to mess with classics whether it is music, books or films. Rarely is a remake or sequel ever as good or better than the original... although a few interpretations have been known to be good musically. Sorry, I probably should have kept my mouth shut, but sometimes I don't behave very well... I need someone to make me be good - roflmao!

I have to agree with that. Besides in any form, the remakes almost always fall far short of the originals. Add to that, that I am not up on new bands by choice and I really doubt there are many who could pull it off.

However, there is one song that did quickly come to mind, Time Has Come Today by the Chambers Brothers. It just doesn't get much airplay any more even on classic rock stations.

I think nickelback might have a hard time matching the likes of Glenn Frey, Joe Walsh, and Don Felder on guitar. Felder and Walsh were simply masterful on their extended guitar blend with Hotel California. Henley was no slouch either on the guitar.

I guess I could have picked Santana for some of the guitar work on my choice...but I was thinking mainly of the vocals and how the group really sounds well together. IMO.

I don't really want to defend my choice. That's not the point of this blog. I was more interested in having a bit of interaction with some music lovers on a Sunday afternoon...and hearing some of their personal choices.

I'm going to agree with WoW. Music has always seemed to run parallel to my life's experiences. We don't get chances to remake the special moments in time and anything less is a poor substitution at best.

Thanks for the topic. Concerning the vocals, that's going to require some more thought which I always welcome. Good post.. I'll probably be going through my music archives for the next hour.....thanks.

What I have found in the last few years is that with the increase in recording technology, the original artists, either bands or former band members, have been able to do better live versions of their own material. I usually find this on YouTube.

This may not be what you want to hear, but everybody has been conditioned to enjoying a song, then seeing it done by cover bands in clubs or name acts that were anemic. Every once in a while, there will be a remade classic that, in its own right, becomes a classic. The best one I could think of was Jimi Hendrix doing Bob Dylan's All Along the Watchtower. The Dave Mason version wasn't bad either. Another example is Eric Clapton doing Cocaine by J. J. Cale. But these are very rare.

Now, back in the day, there were many bands in the sixties that put new twists on originals particularly in blues and rock that were tasty and gave the song a new lease on life.

I just don't think that most of musical styles of today lend themselves to pulling this off. I am not dissing today's music, but saying that the variance musical styles does not lend itself to this.

Here's a bit of clarification...

I was speaking about vocals specifically. If I had to choose musicians...that's a whole diffierent ballgame and I would have chosen a great guitarist such as Santana or Alex Lifeson of Rush.

Yanno...back in the 90's the country music industry put out a CD where between 14 and 18 different country singers all covered the Eagles songs. It was a hit and earned awards so this can be done...and has been done quite successfully.

So...can you think of a song where you would like a different singer to perform it and if so...who would that singer be?

Yeah, i cringed. I would love to have a video of my face as I read that...the perplexed weird expression as the eyes roll to the ceiling would have been priceless. I would love to hear a Pink Floyd version of it. I have a CD of Spooky Tooth doing I am the Walrus that I love.

Yeah, i cringed. I would love to have a video of my face as I read that

I just thought that song should have been a much harder rock song than it was and Ozzie has a great singing voice. I think he could have a great version of it.
The remake does not always have to sound exactly like the origional.

I think Ozzie with Lita Ford........Close my eyes forever......his voice was totally awesome...........

To be honest I have never really cared for remakes of songs I like....probaby got use to it the original way so never cared for it if it was changed.............Tho I have to say (and most people wont relate cause they are not into country LOL) the exemption to that rule is I like Conway Twittys version of the Rose more than Bette Midlers......and I love Bette Midler.

I'm not much for covers, either, but Jello Biafra & D.O.A.'s cover of "We Gotta Get Outta This Place" was outstanding!

I don't see anybody ever covering anything by Janis Joplin though, as I don't believe anybody out there these days has the voice for it. (except maybe Aretha Franklin)

BTW Kat: I was in your neck of the woods last week, and am heading there again this week, possibly to deliver to IKEA in Richmond again...

there are already too many remakes imo, and its really killing the music industry. It sucks for those of us who are original because everyone wants to hear the same shit over and over again.

Kat,

Your mention of that country album reminded me: I have a copy of the "Tom's Album" cd. It's made up entirely of other performers covering the Suzanne Vega son "Tom's Diner".

Some pretty neat versions on it, though I can't tell you more, because it's been years since I listened to it!

(I have about 1000 records, and the number of CD's is on the rise...)

I re-recorded David Essex's "Rock On" before Def Leppard did and I threw a guitar solo into it, beefed up the percussion and tempo; made it more dancible. You can hear it at www.myspace.com/riccihansen; the track is Rock On -again. I may have a track by David Gates that I recorded for my ex on our anniversary called "Make It With You" as well......Give it a listen and let me know if it rocks you!

OOPS! That reminds me...disregard the woman in the photos, we are no longer married and I haven't changed the photos yet. ..better get on that.......thanxI

This got me to thinkin' and reminiscsing about back in the mid 50's When I had my band..Danny Ray and the Bluejays, in LA..
Our theme song opening and closing was our version of Danny Boy.. Started slow and nomally then segued to fast rock
I got curious and found a couple of versions on youtube..I know that an old country/rocker made our version a hit for him,,Conway Twitty
There are still a couple of versions on youtube, one by a Swedish lady and another by some guy..
If you're curious, go to youtube and type in, Danny Boy /rock version..
The guy's not too bad

I wrote a parody of Kenny Roger's "Lucille" many years ago..
Based on an actual occurence that I experienced while driving down I70 one night
between Lovelock and .Winnemucca, Nv.
Mine was titled, :You Took A Fine Time To Leave Me Loose Wheel"

Later I wrote one called "I Ain't No Cowboy, I Just Found The Hat"
That was based on a bumper sticker and related to my experience
of a front wheel coming off my van and rolling ahead of me to land in the median
several hundred feet ahead of me.
