A Rainy Weekend...What Did You Do?

In sticking with the childhood theme. Up until the age of 12, if it was raining or inclement weather on a weekend and you had to stay inside, what did you do?

My brother, Tommy, was three years younger than I was, so that pretty much eliminated playing games together.

We would watch cartoons after breakfast while my dad disappeared into his half bath with the newspaper to shit and fart for an hour. What that man could do to a bathroom was felonious assault on the nostrils.

Fortunately, my dad liked sports as did I, so he and I watched those. I grew up in suburban LA, so games began at 10:00 our time. Tommy didn't like sports, so he was SOL. He would usually just play with his tinker toys or snap train instead.

- I'd play board games with my brother. That never lasted long because he cheated a lot.

- I carried a deck of cards around in my pocket for a couple of years and practiced shuffling them. My mom was convinced that I was going to grow up and move to Vegas and be a card dealer in some seedy casino.

- I'd role play a lot and dress-up like a superhero (Wonder Woman)...or play chef with my mom's pots and pans...or play dolls with me as their teacher.

- I'd draw a lot of pictures. Painting was also popular.

- I'd also practice dribbling my basketball on the back porch...or I'd jump rope.

I always remember playing with some of the younger kids in the neighborhood and we'd play school. I was the teacher.... that's funnier than shit! now! lol

I've always loved music and I had a record player and a bunch of K-tel albums! ha!! I used to dance and sing in my room for hours on rainy days!!! I don't sing much anymore, my cats act like it's a painful experience for them!!

But if it was a nice day, we were out alllllllllll day long! Drinking out of the hose and riding our bikes without a helmet....lol And in the summer we stayed at the pool..... every day!!

My sisters and I would play with toys in our rooms. We didn't have the barbie dolls..we had little plastic toy animals...and we would create our own animal world where they played, talked, pretty much "human things". And I won't lie, there were a couple....ok..few times we would get into arguments.

In all honesty though...if we were already outside when thunderstorms hit...our Mom had a hard time getting us to come in because we loved playing out in the rain. And snow storms..we loved being out in them. Mom always complained she could keep us in the house.

If it was raining I was usually in the basement painting from about age 5. Or making something out of the scrap materials my dad brought home from jobs. I spent hours doing that anyway no matter what the weather was like. When I was older I would usually be down there either working on an art project or playing with my chemistry set.I also had a reading corner set up down there with stacks of books and magazines that my grandfather would give me to read. That place was my sanctuary away from anything that might be going on elsewhere in the house.

Played with my Barbies, played board games, and I also did a lot of drawing as a kid. If I had friends over sometimes we would listen to cassette tapes and get dressed up and then sing in our hair brushes....sometimes we would even tape record ourselves singing.

But if it was nice out.....I always outside even when it was cold out and snowing....didn't care. Kids aren't like that nowadays....they'd rather be glued to the computer or video games.

Ohh rainy weekends..

I would go on grand adventures to far off or imaginary lands.. I'd meet new and interesting people.. I'd see things only a book can introduce you to.

That or we'd bake something yummy and then play scrabble.
