Boys sporting red, white, and blue on Cinco de Mayo ignite a controversy at a California school.

Can you believe the stupidity, and the lack of common sense with people in this country these days. One can't even wear their own country's colors anymore. Seems like when you do, you're trying to start shit, and it's considered hate with some of these morons.

I say these people that have a problem with American pride, then they can go fuck themselves!

Well you have to look at it this way, why did they pick that day to wear it? Was it to make a political statement and try to provoke other students? I would imagine that the school did not want problems coming up. These kids are not there to stir up shit they are there to get an education and maybe those in charge did not see a good outcome for this and took action to make sure things did not get out of hand.

It doesn't matter, Rhonda. There is no such ban on wearing red, white, and blue colors to school. Hell, that Mexican holiday isn't even an official holiday in Mexico. I do have a problem with people trying to turn this country into their own native country. On top of that, those students rights were violated. When did minorities start having more rights than the average Joe?

When did minorities start having more rights than theaverage Joe??? When they learned how to spell minority...thats when...most of them probably can't. If you are going to come to America for the benefits this country has to offer. then respect Americans and follow their lead. All immigrants should be proud f the red, white, and blue. It is their to protect and serve. Isn't that at least one of the reasons they came here?

After watching the video, it seemed to me the kids did wear the shirts to make a statement...not start trouble. Another little factor that the report brought up.....later in the day...the school had "ethnic dancers perform at lunch". Way I see it, if the school had a problem with the shirts, then they should have not allowed the dancers at lunch. JMHO.

Cinco de Mayo .... Big fekkin deal. So, the Mexican Army (or whatever) beat the French. So What???
Who ain't beat the French?? For Gods sake....the Haitians beat the French.

It's only racist when 'white' people downgrade others. It's perfectly fine to stomp
on the rights of whitey. I've noticed that Wikapedia no longer lists Azteca, and is pretty much vague on La Raza nowadays. (*Sotomayor is a member).

It would matter if trouble started in the school and someone ended up getting hurt. Californai has always had a strong Spanish heritage as that was who settled that area first. It was a part of Mexico and Spanish territories for many years so that heritage is part of that state's heritage. I don't think it hurts kids to be exposed to something that is part of the history of that area. You do not know what kind of problems that school might be experiencing between the students and if he thought it was going to cause a problem that could disrupt the school I think he had every right to call it as he sees it. The dances were a planned school event. Students trying to make a statement by wearing the shirts was not. If you want to come down to true American heritage then we would only be celebrating Native American heritage. All the rest came later one way or the other if you want to think about it. When the Irish came everyone said it was bad and would tear the country apart, when the Italians came everyone said it would tear the country apart. You know for a country where the majority came from somewhere else, they sure like to get upset when someone does the same thing that their ancestors did. And not all of them came over here legally either. Now I am not for everyone just running over the border as I don't think that is the answer to their problems, but I think people do tend to overreact at times. A hundred years from now people will be upset that some group from who knows where shows up.

I may catch a world of shit over this, and you know how I feel about our Country...............BUT I don't see that the principal did anything wrong here.....if he did it to keep from having a riot break out.........yes we have our civil liberties.......but it is the schools responsibility to keep ALL students safe........and I believe that's why he handled it the way he did was not violating anyone's rights.........and I bet if anyone wore a shirt that said Americans suck that he wouldn't have handled it in the same way.

This is not a bunch of illegal immigrants that he was protecting......these are AMERICAN CITIZENS that deserve the same rights as anyone else does in this country whether they are minorities or not...........the safety of all children is what should be considered.

I agree that we should be allowed to wear what we want to wear but some common sense should also go along with it. JMHO

It's funny how Mexicans classify themselves with the white people & put themselves in a higher class than black people but just as soon as they don't like something they want to nut hug or unite with black people to blame every mother fucking thing on the white man.
Simple.... No American flag ... no celebrating 5 May ... that's how I'd have it done in the school. In addition I'd call immigration or Ynot just to fuck up their day. Really this kind of crap is ridiculous.
I say these people that have a problem with American pride, then they can go fuck themselves!
I agree

Would we get offended if someone wore Mexican colors on the 4th of July. Hell no. If someone told me that I couldn't wear my colors there'd be a fight.

Yea me too.........difference is we are adults........we are not talking about a school with teenage children who on that alone could mean a fight for no reason, let alone over something like this.

Would you want your children going to a school that the teachers/principal allowed stuff that could possible endanger lives.......not just the kids involved but innocent bystanders..........

Ok so the holiday isn't an American holiday........but there are students there who do celebrate it...........we complain cause they took prayer out of school, children can no longer celebrate holidays such as Christmas in school........we complain they violate our christian backgrounds because of it.........but what other religious beliefs do we violate by not allowing other religious holidays being allowed to be celebrated.........but we do this in the name of peace.........the safety of our children........

The principal did not say they could never wear these shirts just not on that particular day...............and you have to ask yourself why that particular day.......you can't tell me it wasn't arranged between these boys to wear these shirts prior to showing up at school........unless you know for a fact they wear them all the time which I have not seen any evidence that they do.......so why was it so important for them to wear it that day..........you say they do it for American Pride.........sorry I don't buy that.........not that I don't believe they have American Pride but because they are teenagers they wanted to stir shit.......and they managed it............

The principal didn't have any choice as far as I can see.......by the way I think American Pride is a wonderful thing........but American Pride isn't about the color of the skin.......and because this is America we get to choose what we believe in, what we get to celebrate........its call Freedom............If we can't have freedom for everyone ..........no matter what color of the skin........than we don't really have Freedom at all. I love you to death .. well not literally but you know what I mean. Why can't the kids wearing red, white, & blue being American wear the colors of their own country ? It really bothers me to no end that a flag not of our country can be flown free at will but yet we have to lower or hide our colors just because of someone's heritage or they don't feel that it's appropriate for them. Safety of all children yes I agree & the American flag is a big history book on why all nationalities are free to choose what to do, what they want etc. here in the United States today. So for a different culture to be even remotely thought of as being offended about our flag it's like a slap in their own faces as well. FREEDOM ...

I'm not really sure I have the right words to describe how I feel over this incident. Sad is what comes to mind, really, really sad.

I may be unpopular with my statement also. No the kids wearing the shirts weren't wrong.. but then, the principal wasn't wrong either. Consider.. America is a country based on immigrants. We .. unless we are native american in descent are ALL immigrants to this country. All the holidays celebrated here nationwide are immigrant holidays. What's wrong with those of mexican heritage celebrating their holiday when those of Asian descent celebrate holidays of their home country? When Arab peoples celebrate their holidays.. when people of different religions celebrate their holidays? See what I'm saying?

I know that anti-mexican sentiment is very high in the U.S. right now.. but if you consider the past, they used to own California and most of the southwestern U.S. They are on their home turf in a way.

I am against illegal immigration. Totally against it. But, having said that, I'm for people of varying ethnic backgrounds having the right to keep their culture... as long as they fucking learn english to do it :D

I love you too death too FB...........but the point is that the principal didn't say they could never wear those shirts..........he said for that day to keep from any incidents getting out of hand and getting violent that they couldn't be worn..........What do you think would happen if the roles were reversed.............say its the fourth of July and there was a big celebration at school (yes i know its when school is out but this is hypothetically) what if at that celebrate 5 Mexican teenagers showed up wearing the flag of Mexico....What do you think would happen.....the same thing the principal was trying to prevent in this case................

Yes its sad that someone was told that they couldn't wear the flag...........BUT to prevent a riot breaking out.........than they should have been told to change shirts...........it all boils down to is it more important to allow teenagers to have the right to wear anything they want or is it more important to keep our children safe.............

Safety is more important. Plain and simple. I agree with Skwirl, neither side is "wrong" in this incident.

I found this site to be interesting:

Mike's List

Go down to where it says "Mike's Handy List of US Holidays, Celebrations, Observances".

We all need to respect each others observances as this country has a vast mix of different cultures in it.

No the kids wearing the shirts weren't wrong

That would depend on their motives in wearing the shirt. If it was a matter of pride in being an American then no, but if they wore them to stir up shit in the school and start trouble then yes they were wrong and I do not think wearing the country's colors should be used for that. That would be the same as showing up in the middle of Harlem wearing a confederate flag and a white sheet. Does not matter what you use to start shit. If you wear something including the flag to make a statement against another person and to start trouble then it is not right.

It is easy to jump on the American pride bandwagon and that is all fine but I do not think that is what any of this was all about.

I don't think it's right to have an unofficial Mexican holiday and culture shoved down your throats in a U.S. public school either.

I am sure the Native Americans were not to crazy having Christianity shoved down their throats either.........

I understand what you are saying Shawn.........but obviously the school felt that this was ok for their school system to do.........and it might have just been a case of opening the students minds to other cultures...........but those students that do celebrate it are American citizens and may feel that we shove our traditions down their throats too.........JMO

maybe the school should have not allowed any celebration of cinco de mayo on school property????
