Spring Cleaning…I Mean…Junk Shopping... posted 4/24/2010 11:16:18 PM | 3 kudos what's this?     report abuse tagged: shopping, people, life, spring   KitKat25 Well…it’s that time of year again. A time when everyone goes through their houses and garages and decides which junk they want to part with…and which junk they want to keep...and sets said junk on the side of the road. That’s right Pervia…my street has turned into a garbage dump…and it will look this way for the next week. You see…once a year…we’re allowed to put things out on the side of the road...and these items can either be picked up by some random person who just happens to be driving by…or they can be picked up by the garbage collectors at the end of the week. They call this week spring cleaning…It’s really junk shopping week. Now I’ve come to regard this week with humor…because it’s really quite humorous. I’ve sat outside many times and watched as the different people drive slowly up and down the different neighborhood streets in search of some “lost treasure” that needs to be rescued. Another interesting point is how people decide which neighborhoods to shop in. Basically, it’s similar to shopping at garage sales. It seems that most people will shop in a neighborhood one step classier than their own…and so on. What I’ve come to realize is there are indeed a few treasures just waiting to be discovered. Unfortunately… there is a LOT of junk hiding "it" from your view. So Pervia…Does your city, town or street have an annual spring cleaning week like the one described in this blog? If so…do you participate? If not…would you participate if there was one in your neck of the woods? Me? I actually do participate in this annual event. I think it’s great…even if it does mess up the street for a couple of weeks. Why? Because a lot of people will set out perfectly good furniture and household items they no longer want…but simply do not want to sell or cart away. 	Our city runs trucks year around to pick up that stuff. They come by every two weeks.

	I think that this could be a good idea overall. But personally, I don't see myself picking throughh other peoples junk that they don't want. Especially where used furniture is concerned, I think that's pretty unsanitary.

	No we don't have a spring cleaning week, but thankfully we have yahoo freecyclers and craigslist so you can get rid of just about anything you have..........as long as you're giving it away.......... we have been working on getting stuff ready for a rummage sale........we have taken literally tons of stuff that we thought we couldn't live without before..........and find we can ..........so we are going to have a rummage sale the first weekend of May..........but we are going together with my sister, my neice, and my sisters two friends...........and we are having it up at my sister's........which is an area people don't have many rummage sales so when you have a big one like ours is going to be..........people flood in by the dozens.............Than what is left over........Ill post on freecycler and get rid of the rest.............i use to donate a lot to the thrift stores here..........and still do to one that helps with the animal shelter.......but Goodwill and Salvation army have gotten so high priced (in many instances you can buy new for what they want you to pay for used) and I would rather just give the stuff to someone who will pick through it......keep what they want and pass it on........... Hell by the time we get all the stuff for the rummage sale out of the house ...........we may not need to find a bigger house LOL

	When I lived in New York City, Thursday night was the night that the people on Park Avenue put out their trash. Sometimes they put out furniture that looked like new and bags of clothes from designer shops. All the college students would go up there and wait for them to put out the items. The most popular person that day was the one who could get their hands on a truck to help everyone to get their furniture pieces home. I remember a marble top coffee table that took three of my friends to help me move. The rules were that if someone had put a piece of paper with their name on something no one else would take it before someone got there to help them.

	I think that sounds like fun. When I was married we used to dumpster dive. It is where we found all kinds of things to use with our art projects. There was a great frame shop dumpster, and a stained glass dumpster, and an art store dumpster that we found many things to complete our projects! Your weekend dump sounds fun to me!

	No we don't have anything like that!!! I live in Bum Fuck Egypt ...no Trash pick up here!! Most ppl around here have yard sales!!! we used to dumpster dive. OMG...you can't hardly get to our dumpsters because of PPL getting shit out of them!(around Here..that is!!!! ) When I started remodeling my House...I Stripped it completely and set it next to the Hwy..with "Take Me" signs on all of the stuff!!! (computer desk,sinks,toilet,Bathtub...etc) It was really funny...Most all of it was gone the next Morning... when I woke up!!! Except for the tub....It took a couple of weeks for that to go!! It weighed over 300#! Greenie for the Good/Interesting blog!

	I knew a lady who used to keep tabs on the obituaries and make the rounds to the residence of the deceased and get some really choice stuff that she would sell at a garage sale.

	Yep, got that where I live. I love it! I've found nice dishes, pots/pans, end table, lamps, etc doing what I call "Spring Cleaning Shopping". I always go through the "richer" neighborhoods..they always throw out nice things.
