Never Imagined....

I know that I have touched on the subject of donating blood before but this time I am looking at it from a whole new angle.
One I honestly never thought would happen.

Personally, due to meds that I take I am unable to donate blood or plasma.
However, Griz has for many years on a regular basis and most likely will until he is physically unable to anymore.
From the beginning I have thought that is super kewl!
Anyone who takes their time and gives of themself like that just to help others gets my thumbs up.

Unfortunately I just spent a week in the hospital and although I went in for one thing, after testing I got blind sided by something totally unexpected... and ended up having two blood transfusions last weekend.

I don't know about anyone else, but I had never thought of having someone else's blood pumped into my body......... I never imagined watching blood that used to be in someone else dripping into a small hose and then run through a needle into the inside of my forearm.
They told me it may feel cold, but it didn't. Which I have to admit I was quite glad of.

They also gave me consent forms that said although there was a slight chance of infection, HIV, aids, hepatitus, there was still that chance.
I know how well this is all screened, but at that moment Ryan White and all of the pure hell that he went through came to mind. And all the What If's...

I sat there and just looked at the paper for probably five minutes, knowing I needed to do this without any delay. But I still sat there until I realized I had tears in my eyes. I just didn't know what I was afraid of.... what "could" happen, or the fact that I needed it and why.
Tears can quickly lead to anxiety attacks.... and your mind jumping all over the place, making a bad situation even worse. And more anxiety attacks.....

But then as I laid there watching this scary---to me---, painless transfusion take place I began to wonder about the person whose donation was helping me.
Who were they? Had I ever passed them on the street? What was their reasoning for such a generous gift of life for a total stranger? Although I'm sure my insurance won't think it was quite so generous....

Then my fear changed to appreciation for who ever that person... or persons are.

So to ALL of you who donates blood or plasma... or ever has... Let me say from someone on the other end of the spectrum, THANK YOU!!!
Until you are on this end, you truly have no real concept of how appreciated you really are.

I use to work at a plasma center when I lived in MN..I also use to donate plasma. I never did donate blood. We screened our donor's at every visit. The plasma never left the center until all the test's came back good.

When I donated plasma it is a little different. The plasma is seperated from your blood and you are given your blood back. It was cold at times and I also had a funny taste in my mouth from it.

Good Blog..

I used to donate and my employer let me do so monthly with pay. But I wound up with too much in iron in my blood, so they couldn't use me. It also makes for a great way to check for STDs without cost.
