Shuttle just landed here in Florida. I was aware of the time, but wasn't paying attention. I had the front door open too. I just sat down to my PC when I wiggled the mouse and BOOM, BOOM! My front door rattled, I jumped up & my dog was at my side in a flash! I swear to God I thought someone was trying to break in. Before I took another step, I turned my head towards the clock and then looked at the dog and said: "It was just the shuttle!"

I don't think anyone has ever seen me move so fast. I was ready to pounce. My heart is still going a million miles an hour, lol

I haven't heard a sonic boom in years. For those unfamiliar with them, think a loud thunder clap.

I remember hearing those all the time in the early, EARLY '60s. (I guess aircraft
emanating from Wright Patterson AFB in Dayton would have been to blame...)
I was about three years old at the time, and after awhile they became part of life.

We were supposed to get one this morning as the shuttle passed overhead, slightly
southwest of Cincinnati, but either it didn't come to pass or I slept through it.

And yeah, they're LOUD, and when they're unexpected they scare the SHIT out of you!!

We had one the last time a shuttle landed here in SW Fl.
Double boom and a couple of minutes later it landed a couple of hundred miles away.
Ewe..I remember sonic booms in Mn., most coming from the AFB in Fargo
and Grand Forks....
The reason they stopped??
Turkey farmers in northern Mn. bitched about panicking their turkeys

We seem to get this every so many years. It doesn't happen much here.

Closest to a sonic boom I've come to is when a pair of F 16 flew overhead. That reminds me of cute story. I had just moved in with Mick, and my cat, Apache, was 5 years old. Mick had just gotten his cat, Ming. A charcoal himalayan with the prettiest blue eyes on a cat. Anyway...to get these 2 cats used to the idea if they were going to be outside that they would have to stay in the yard. The house sat about 200 feet off a main highway, US 23. So...we would take the cats out on leashes. Apache was a bit stubborn about it at first, but he adapted pretty quick. Anyway...one day while outside, I happened to glance up and saw 2 F 16 flying overhead...didn't hear them, just saw them. Commented to Mick about them, then realized why I didn't "hear" them...they fly faster than the speed of sound. I no sooner said, "OH SHIT!", and Mick asked "What' and here it came...BOOM!!!!! OMG!! Those cats FREAKED OUT! Apache was flipping, hopping and twisting, Ming got out of her collar and looked like a little magic carpet floating across the yard she was running so low to the ground.

When the ruckus calmed down, Mick asked what in the hell was that...and I told him "just a couple of military F16's flying overhead".

I have been in the Woods Hunting and had that Happen!!! The animals Squat down in a Hurry!!! and I did too!!!
There's a Mountain not to far away that has a Tower that they use for Training, the only thing is....its Right beside a "Dam".......!!!
Before I learned all that....
I was fishing just a week or 2 after 9-11....and I saw a Jet Come in...Way LOW....and it was headed straight for the Dam!!!!
I'm thinking....OMG...those Terrorist are gonna crash that jet into the dam....
I got down in the Bottom of the boat..freaking the fuck out!!!
The Jet gets just a few 100 yards from the Tower.....and turns Straight Up... toward the Sky!!!
Then the Boom Hits.....and Freaks me out even more!!!

Later that day I found out about the training tower!!! True Story!

The military put a lot of restrictions on the flying speeds over what the sonic booms did. They can knock pictures off of the walls like a mild earthquake. But the main thing was freaking out farm animals. I recall my grandparents getting pissed as a kid when the supersonic fighters came to be and the jet jockeys would put the petal to the metal and KABOOM. Hens wouldn't lay, cattle wouldn't produce milk, horses tried to jump the corral fence. The first time I ever heard the word "fuck" was from my grandfather when there was a sonic boom.
