I'm sure everyone has heard this on the news by now.... I'd like to take a moment to send prayers to one of our members here on AMD. Texastigress works for the IRS IN Austin! I hope she's not there or that's not the building she works in!!! I sent her an email a little while ago to check on her! Let's keep her in our thoughts, along with all the others that were in the building.

It was not a terrorist attack, but rather an American with a grudge against the IRS playing kamikaze in his own plane.

a plane???? WTF???

It was a private single engine plane! From what I've heard, he was pissed at the IRS for allegedly screwing him out of $40,000 and he was pissed at the politicians for the freeloaders that they are and on and on and on! He flew his plane into the IRS office building in Austin, Texas- at least what I've heard so far- been on the news all day!

The pilot died. I haven't heard yet if there were any deaths in the building. It did say there were many "walking wounded" ... I've got my fingers crossed the no one else died

It was not a terrorist attack,

How can you say it isn't a terrorist act............

terrorism, act of terrorism, terrorist act (the calculated use of violence (or the threat of violence) against civilians in order to attain goals that are political or religious or ideological in nature; this is done through intimidation or coercion or instilling fear)

it was violence against civilians..........at a govt office.........there were more people in that building that just the IRS.........plus he copied the worst attack on America in history.............the 9/11 attacks............sorry in my opinion he was a terrorist............

tho i suppose there will be others who won't think so cause he isnt middle eastern......... JMHO

There have been more incidents of domestic terrorism than by terrorists from outside of the USA. It is easy for people to forget that fact after 9/11. The bombing in Oklahoma comes to mind when I think of that. Not sure if I would qualify a person with a private plane going off the deep end and doing something like this as terrorism although I suppose it could come under that classification.

Here is a link to the guy's suicide post.

How can you say it isn't a terrorist act............

Sorry, but I don't consider one flipped out person going over the edge and acting alone to be a terrorist attack. I suppose it may be a matter of semantic differences of interpretation.

Wow...go to work and just miss everything! I just got done reading that guys note...and wow! He was mad, mad, MAD, at the government. So, ok, he was mad at the IRS and the Government, still no excuse to involve innocent people in this. And I really, really hope texastigress wasn't in that building today.

The IRS was on the first floor from what I understand, so maybe she made it out without any problems along with others.

A guy has a grudge against politicians and the IRS and launches a fiery suicide attack against innocent people to make a political point. The only difference between this guy and the Christmas day bomber is the particular point he was trying to make.

Not sure if I forgot to hit send after I wrote this but for some reason it isnt posted.............and I know PTN......would never delete a comment..........well unless it was a bitchy one lol

Sorry, but I don't consider one flipped out person going over the edge and acting alone to be a terrorist attack.

First U.S. Aircraft Hijacked, May 1, 1961: Puerto Rican born Antuilo Ramierez Ortiz forced at gunpoint a National Airlines plane to fly to Havana, Cuba, where he was given asylum.

Hebron Massacre, February 25, 1994: Jewish right-wing extremist and U.S. citizen Baruch Goldstein machine-gunned Moslem worshippers at a mosque in West Bank town of Hebron, killing 29 and wounding about 150.

Zekharya Attack, June 9, 1996: Unidentified gunmen opened fire on a car near Zekharya, killing a dual U.S./Israeli citizen and an Israeli. The Popular Front for the Liberation of Palestine (PFLP) was suspected.
Suspected but not proved.

Empire State Building Sniper Attack, February 23, 1997: A Palestinian gunman opened fire on tourists at an observation deck atop the Empire State Building in New York City, killing a Danish national and wounding visitors from the United States, Argentina, Switzerland, and France before turning the gun on himself. A handwritten note carried by the gunman claimed this was a punishment attack against the "enemies of Palestine."

Suicide Bombing in Moscow, December 9, 2003: A female suicide bomber killed 5 other persons and wounded 14 outside Moscow’s National Hotel. She was said to be looking for the State Duma.

These were taken from Significant Terrorist Incidents, 1961-2003: A Brief Chronology.........at here

Sorry, but I don't consider one flipped out person going over the edge and acting alone to be a terrorist attack
Perhaps not, WOW..........but the State Department does..........

also.........

Theodore Kaczynski has been designated a "domestic terrorist" by the FBI. You may remember him as the unabomber.........

and although the Fort Hood shootings have yet to be ruled as terrorism.......it is still being debated...........in one report they are using Obama as an excuse for it not being charged........

Phares said he doesn't expect the shooting to be ruled an act of terrorism because he believes the Obama administration has made a political calculation to not fight a war on terror. He cited the administration's decision to substitute "Overseas Contingency Operation" for the "global war on terror."

"Had this occurred under the previous administration or any other previous administration, the natural position would have been America is under attack," he said. "It would have been a different posture. Now because a strategic decision has been made to disengage, our efforts will be suffering. They're not going to coin it as terrorism."

Scheuer said law enforcement officials have been loathe to rule the shooting an act of terrorism because "they're politically correct."

How ever you want to look at that incident.....its more than apparent that One flipped out person going over the edge can be a terrorist...............JMO

All in all... you are all missing the larger picture here! This happened out of extreme frustration! According to the news I've heard today (all day), this has been in the making for several months! How they found out is anybody's guess- perhaps from looking at his computer? Government and/or local officials don't work THAT fast!! So how they know this, I dunno! Was he a nut case? I dunno- neither does anyone else right now, unless someone else here, knows otherwise!

I figure the IRS pushed him over the top or at least had a lot to do with it! Large sums of money taken from some people, would IMO, tend to bring their homicidal tendencies out of them (far quicker if they're unstable), when it wouldn't otherwise! You hear it from time to time, of people losing all they have left and sometimes when they're in their 50s and 60s, at times, through no fault of their own! Enron, is a case in point- several people with million dollar+ retirement funds, lost almost all they had (a couple down to a grand or two)! The Madoff scam, is another case! What do you do THEN and at that age when that happens???

When some people lose that kind of money, not only are they losing their comfort in life- they lose their families, house, cars and their credit is shit! Think the IRs, the Madoffs or CEOs of major corporations care? Think again!

I'm afraid that the economic mess that the previous administrations and the present administration (banks, financial institutions, CEOs, unions, ad nauseum) have created this econ mess with impunity, And I think we're going to see more of this as things get worse- before they get better! JMO

Sorry, Somnium, this isn't a case of justifiable homocide.

Let's get a grip here. We might quibble about the amount of taxes we have to pay, but if we want a military, a highway system, an air traffic control system, homeland security, public universities, public schools, national parks, law enforcement, social security, and medicare... we're going to have taxes. And we're going to have an agency that collects those taxes.

I make a good income, and I pay a lot of taxes. Would I like to pay less? Sure. Am I under the delusion that we could do away with them, or even cut them by 25%? No, and anyone who thinks that is kidding themselves.

Sorry, Somnium, this isn't a case of justifiable homocide.

Never said that the IRS was THE problem that brought him to a state of irrational behavior by itself- only that his problems with the IRS probably capped it! Whatever he went through over the months, is not completely known yet!

I read about this tragedy this morning, but I had no idea anyone in the blogs worked in that area. I hope Texastigress is okay and doing well. I personally got caught in downtown OKC during the OKC bombing so I know how traumatic these events can be. She's in my thoughts.

So if anyone hears from texastigress please let us all know.
Thanks for letting us know about her, PTN.
Best wishes being sent for her and all that may have been involved in such a tragedy.

Last I heard they said only the pilot died but they were looking for one missing person. But that was hours ago...

Hey Everyone!

Texastigress here. Thanks for all of your concern, but I can ASSURE YOU, that I was sound asleep in my bed in South Austin when the plane hit The Echelon Building which is in BFE North Austin. My best friend woke me up at noon telling me about it and all I could say was that I thought I was looking at 911 and the Oklahoma City Bombing all over again, but on a smaller scale. The events leading up to this is tragic and this should have never happened, but, it did and we have to deal with it.

I read Joe Stack's blog or should we say, suicide letter, and it's indeed a very sad situation that he had with "the agency" and it appears that the agents he had to deal with weren't able to help him. Whether they were hard-core or not, Mr Stack was what we would call a "Tax Protester" - he attended meetings on how NOT TO pay taxes and I think that's probably what got him on the "road to ruin" to begin with, not to mention the crap with his wife's self-employment income. Here's an excerpt from his blog -

"My introduction to the real American nightmare starts back in the early ‘80s. Unfortunately after more than 16 years of school, somewhere along the line I picked up the absurd, pompous notion that I could read and understand plain English. Some friends introduced me to a group of people who were having ‘tax code’ readings and discussions. In particular, zeroed in on a section relating to the wonderful “exemptions” that make institutions like the vulgar, corrupt Catholic Church so incredibly wealthy. We carefully studied the law (with the help of some of the “best”, high-paid, experienced tax lawyers in the business), and then began to do exactly what the “big boys” were doing (except that we weren’t steeling from our congregation or lying to the government about our massive profits in the name of God). We took a great deal of care to make it all visible, following all of the rules, exactly the way the law said it was to be done."

"The intent of this exercise and our efforts was to bring about a much-needed re-evaluation of the laws that allow the monsters of organized religion to make such a mockery of people who earn an honest living. However, this is where I learned that there are two “interpretations” for every law; one for the very rich, and one for the rest of us… Oh, and the monsters are the very ones making and enforcing the laws; the inquisition is still alive and well today in this country."

"That little lesson in patriotism cost me $40,000+, 10 years of my life, and set my retirement plans back to 0."

Here's what he wrote about his face-to-face audit with "the agency" -

"After my experience with the CPA world, following the business crash I swore that I’d never enter another accountant’s office again. But here I am with a new marriage and a boatload of undocumented income, not to mention an expensive new business asset, a piano, which I had no idea how to handle. After considerable thought I decided that it would be irresponsible NOT to get professional help; a very big mistake."

"When we received the forms back I was very optimistic that they were in order. I had taken all of the years information to Bill Ross, and he came back with results very similar to what I was expecting. Except that he had neglected to include the contents of Sheryl’s unreported income; $12,700 worth of it. To make matters worse, Ross knew all along this was missing and I didn’t have a clue until he pointed it out in the middle of the audit. By that time it had become brutally evident that he was representing himself and not me."

"This left me stuck in the middle of this disaster trying to defend transactions that have no relationship to anything tax-related (at least the tax-related transactions were poorly documented). Things I never knew anything about and things my wife had no clue would ever matter to anyone. The end result is… well, just look around."

This is what happens to people when they don't take the time to try to educate themselves on the tax code, which, at the beginning, was what he tried to do. I'm not saying that he was wrong or right or that "the agency" was wrong or right, but he was absolutely right about one thing - how could it all come down to this?

Everyday I have to deal with people who feel that they're being picked on, targeted, angry, etc and some justifiably so, but they need to remember that we, who work for this "agency" are people who have to pay their fair share of taxes whether we think it's fair or not. Like it or not, that's just the way it is if you're going to live here in this country.

So, to get back on the subject of the mini-911 we (Austinites) experienced 2 days ago, it was a tremendous shock and we lost one of our own. The supervisor who was missing was a casualty of this senseless incident. I bet he never even seen the plane coming. All of the people who worked in that building when the plane hit are probably going through a lot of psychological shit. I truly FEEL for them and for the deceased supervisor and his family, not to mention Mr Stack's wife and daughter. From the news I heard tonight and it's supposedly on the Internet, the supervisor's wife also worked in that building.

I work in a non-descript building that houses hundreds of employees - everyday that I go to work and I leave safely, I'm always thankful it's just one more day that I'm thankful nothing like that happened to our building. We worry that something like this could happen to us to if someone like Joe Stack was angry with one of us.

So remember, if you have to call us for help, please be kind to the person on the other end - we're just like you and we're there to help you to the best of our ability. To a lot of us, namely me, it's JUST A JOB and it pays my bills. Chances are that we've gone through the same thing you're going through and never assume that we haven't. I've walked several miles in those shoes, so I know how they feel. It feels pretty bad.

Please keep Vern Hunter's wife and family, Mr Stack's wife and daughter as well as the other couple of injured employees in your thoughts and prayers. May this senseless act never repeat itself.
