Dating back to the time he worked in the Clinton administration, White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel has developed an almost notorious reputation in Washington for being a brash personality with a penchant for profanity-laced diatribes. Conversely, his intense nature, in addition to his sharp mind, are what many attribute to his success and effectiveness as a Washington power player. But a remark he made recently in a closed-door meeting attended by White House aides and leaders of liberal special-interest groups has irked many, prompting him to issue an apology.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Emanuel, exasperated upon learning that liberal special-interest groups were planning to run ads against conservative Democrats not supportive of health care reform, blasted the plan as "f------ retarded" over the summer. Naturally, some outrage ensued after Emanuel's words came to light, with former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin taking to her Facebook page to call on President Obama to fire him for what she saw as the equivalent of a racial slur.

Palin, whose son Trig is afflicted with Down syndrome, said she was informed of Emanuel's comment by a fellow parent of a special-needs child and pleaded with the president to "show decency" to the political process by "eliminating" the Chicago native from his inner circle.

In a post titled "Are You Capable of Decency, Rahm Emanuel?," Palin wrote, "Just as we’d be appalled if any public figure of Rahm’s stature ever used the 'N-word' or other such inappropriate language, Rahm’s slur on all God’s children with cognitive and developmental disabilities — and the people who love them — is unacceptable," adding, "it's heartbreaking."

A Politico story today reports that an administration official informed them that Emanuel had already reached out to Special Olympics chairman and CEO Tim Shriver, who recently launched a campaign to end the use of "the R word."

"Rahm called Tim Shriver Wednesday to apologize and the apology was accepted," the unnamed official said.

A mailed a dead fish to a former coworker he disliked, has not offered any apology to the liberals his slur was aimed at, and it's highly doubtful that he ever will.

Naw it's just that political correctness aka pussy footing around the damned issue is retarded. It's sad you can not use a word lest someone be offended.

I agree with you Sam, as far as a lot of it being P.C. But in all honesty, the guy is a bad apple and is rotten as they come. jmo He has a long history of behind the scenes of dirty politics and intimidating people from what I understand...

If you fired everyone who said something like that from their job there would not be very many people working. He did not say to a person you are retarded, but a situation retarded caused by people not thinking of consequences of what they were planning. Was it PC? Nope it wasn't. Have I probably said worse when I was upset or angry? More than likely since I pretty much say what I think and sometimes in extremely colorful language. I am sure my language at times has offended more than one person. Now if he had told a special needs person that they were retarded I would see what the uproar was about, but that was not the situation and I think that some people are blowing it up into something that it is not to suit their own political purposes. JMHO

He comes out of Chicago politics. I would imagine it is about as rough as New York politics. Nice guys get to be lunch for the sharks. Things get done through arm twisting and dealing. I know that from experience.

It's not called "dirty politics" for nothing. Isn't just a "liberal thing" either, it's all over in DC. And, like RJ said, if everyone got fired for saying something totally stupid like that, the unemployment lines would really be long. Was he right in what he said? No, but, to lose his job over it....again, no.

Ain't that the truth........and since the term retarded has pretty much banned in regards of mentally handicap people I guess we need to go back to the original definition

–verb (used with object) 1. to make slow; delay the development or progress of (an action, process, etc.); hinder or impede.

–verb (used without object) 2. to be delayed.

–noun 3. a slowing down, diminution, or hindrance, as in a machine.

funny how people can use a word and yet call someone else on it..............people like to take offense to stuff to put others in a bad light.........personally I think they should all either grow the fuck up or shut the fuck up..............JMO

If he had used the term in one of those ways I would say no big deal. But he used it in a very offensive and derogatory way. Being the White House Chief of Staff he should use better judgment than that. He should know there is a very good chance that when he makes a comment like that it would get out. Should he be fired? If he was a Republican Presidents Chief of Staff, the Dems would be after his head with most of the media right there with them, so he would most likely end up resigning or being let go because of all the bad press. Should he resign or be let go NO and neither should he if he was Republican.
