I rarely rant- in fact, this may be my 2nd one in a year! But damn... how stupid does one have to be, to be president or a member of Congress these days anyway??? And it isn't just this administration- this has happened in previous administrations too as well!

Just heard on the news that NASA has scrubbed any future programs to the Moon! Due to Federal budget restraints, no new allocations towards NASA, to continue research for future Moon landings!

Some will say "good- too expensive anyway!" To that I would say, how do you think we were able to develop the technology for people to logon to the internet in the first place? Love your 52" wide screen HDTV! How about your microwave for cooking... enjoying that? Or how about your fuel efficient autos, or 1000s upon 1000s of products, that didn't even exist just 20 years ago? I know you love your Blackberries, iPods and xyz Pods too- not to mention your GPS, camera capable cell phones! We have the best military technology, bar none- which we need to help keep us safer against aggression! All of this, is through research! I wonder how many people will lose their jobs this time?

Want to fuck up a civilization's competitiveness abilities with the rest of the world? Suppress their ability to continue useful research programs! I'm not bitch'n about not going to the Moon so much, as I am about curtailing the research to do so! It's research that gives us our way of life, allowing us to enjoy a better life- yet... Washington thinks nothing of wasting ¾ of a billion dollars of our money on bullshit bailouts, allowing CEOs to benefit greatly- rubbing up against the unions, that helped put this sorry ass Health Care Reform on the table for a fucking year, with no results- one year wasted, when people need jobs, while we get stuck with the bills!

So again I ask you- how stupid does one have to be, to hold the most powerful office in the world or become a member of Congress???

I could rant this out two or three blog pages but, I'll spare you! I'm just pissed at how so back asswards these elected so-called officials function in life- especially in political life!!! DUMB ASSES!

You missed my point- stifle research and you risk falling behind the rest of 'civilization' but it's not just research to get to the Moon, it's what comes out of research trying to do so, in 100s of other fields! Earth was just rocks, ice and dirt too- still is and water- we've just rearranged things a little!

I wasn't aware that they found ice on the moon..??

Yes... in the southern hemisphere near the polar region! When we intentionally crashed a probe into a crater suspected of having ice in it- the debris thrown up from the impact, suggested there is ice in the crater!

I happen to agree with you and will join the rant. One of our strengths as a nation is innovation... without it we are dead in the water. We need to continue research because it helps drive education, invention, enterprise and excellence... all of which are necessities for us to be successful and have the ability to improve everyone's life in our country and everyone else globally!

"Earth was just rocks, ice and dirt too" Not a true statement.

There are plenty of areas for scientific research without wasting tax dollars
to visit a barren satellite.

Well he's missed the point twice.

You can put a book in front of a kid and he may touch it and read it. Or maybe have him look at the moon and point out to him that man has been there. Without the achievements you stifle our children's enthusiasm, their imagination, and their awe at what we can accomplish. The last man to walk on the moon was Gene Cernan and upon his departure he prayed to God that he wouldn't be the last man to take that marvelous step.
Incidentially it's not the moon that's our next step, it's Mars and beyond. It's the displaced dreams of our children, and not allowing them to look beyond the limits of one world.

You need to go back about 4 billion years ago or so, when weather patterns and life itself were beginning to form! Our planet was not always as lush as you see it now!

I agree with you.. spend the billions that we wasted on bailouts to continue to learn.

I think we should putting more money into scientific research ..particularly space travel. During the sixties and seventies space travel was becomming a reality but since then nothing much has been accomplished other than the space lab and a few robotic prob's

I agree ...many of the electronic marvels of today are a direct result of the space program. Sometimes I think we are headed back into the dark ages where superstitions take the place of real science. I'm sure its a very sad day for many scientists and human kind as a whole.

How Old is the Universe?

Until recently, astronomers estimated that the Big Bang occurred between 12 and 14 billion years ago. To put this in perspective, the Solar System is thought to be 4.5 billion years old and humans have existed as a genus for only a few million years.

I agree...CEO bailouts should never come before new research and education. It's a shame that it's happened...and continues to still happen.

Here's the thing. NASA is a government program that goes way beyond thoise boundaries. The research and development that was supply to NASA has grown this country in it's technology.

What is more important is that It creates High Paying Jobs. Men and Woman who go to college, apply themselves can actually make a very good living wage working for NASA itself and'/or the companies that support it.

IBM, Rockwell Internatonal, and many many more hire people to work on projects they've contracted with NASA. When NASA works American also works and the American public reaps the rewards of the innovation, and development for NASA.

The Space Shuttle Tile was developed in one of our own American Universities, How? Through government and private sector grants. It wasn't developed in China or Japan, the Professors and Students of the University of Washington worked on that project for many years. Most being American students not foreign either.

At one time NASA was the only government funded program that either paid for itself, or made money. Companies Pay to have Payloads put onto Space shuttles and have experiment worked in space. Nothing is free when it comes to NASA.

It's not a waste of money, it's an investment. Investment in good jobs, research, and new technology. Everything this country needs NOW. I don't see where that is throwing money away.
