Prisoners having access to the internet.

I have seen the arguments here and respect everyones opinions.. I see instances where inmates should have access to the internets but certainly there are many who should NOT have access. How do you differentiate though? You can't let one but not the other.. well, yeah you can. If someone is in prison for some hideous crime, they shouldn't have access but for someone who is prison for committing a non violent crime, perhaps they should.
But I came across .....
This story... on Foxnews.

It does shine a light on this subject. This guy is a murderer, he shouldn't be able to be online intimidating people. His internet activity should be monitored more closely (apparently) if he is going to have access. If they (violent offenders) are permitted to have internet access, should it be email ONLY just so they can stay in touch with family and other loved ones?

Wow. I wasn't aware they had FULL internet access. I know the prisoner I talk to only has access to a monitored site to send & recieve emails only. From what I'm told, he does NOT have full access to sites such as MySpace, Faceboo, Yahoo or AOL. He has even asked me to take care of those site for him because he can't access them

Yes, I believe the nature of the crime should count towards whether or not letting them on the internet. Secondly, it should be email ONLY. No web surfing. I don't agree with that at all. It's jail, they are there for a reason. Having the web at your fingertips is a luxery most there don't deserve.

When an inmate is obviously continuing to break the law as is stated in that story, he/she should have their internet access limited to email to family only. And, if they continue to abuse that privilege, then it should be taken away. Internet isn't a "right", it's a luxury/privilege. Pedophiles, their access should be monitored so they are not on the prowl looking for another victim. I personally don't see where internet access is a "legal right". It's a privilege granted, and should be taken away when abused.

I think prisoners should have email access only. I can see the benefit in that. If they show good behavior during their sentence, maybe some more computer privileges could be added at that time.

I do not think they should be allowed to "surf the web" like I do. They haven't earned that right. JMO

I too feel that they should only have access to just their emails.

I have an idea............if they are in prison they should have all but their basic civil rights taken away.........no tv, no Internet, no weight rooms, they should have to work while they are in there........and part of their wages should have to go to their lodging and their medical.......if they are now using a free lawyer........part of their wages should have to go to that.............I am tired of people who break the law ending up with things I and others in my financial situation can't afford.........JMO

From what I understand, they are only allowed to email people. No surfing the web or anything like that. Email or writing mail are basically the same thing and prinsoners have been writing mail all along, so I don't know what difference it makes.

If they have full access to the web, that is a completely different story and they should not be allowed to have that access, but I see this is in Britain and they probably have different laws there than we do....damn Brits

Why do they "have" anything? Should they not have to work to pay back their debt to society? The fruits of that work should be stamps not email. Ah well, guess I'll never understand this new era of non-punishment punishment.

I don't know what Britian does, but I'm quite sure that just because prisoners can now email instead of write snail mail that working in prison has not changed simply because of that. Of course, that is just an assumption of mine, so I could be wrong, but I highly doubt that they don't work...in fact, I would bet money on it.

Email only should be the rule, except for those who work in Prison call centers. yes, they have those... and then they should only have access to the information needed to do their jobs.
